Battlestar Galactica [Blu-ray]

the near great
Pay attention, this is a review of the BLU RAYE not the dvd or (gasp) vhs tape version. Can't believe that over 90 percent of the poor reviews are not from the BLU RAYE. If you're a fan of this old series, you'll about to cry for joy when you see the results of this BLU RAYE...this movie NEVER looked or sounded so good! It has at least twice the color and detail of the dvd (movie) version and do not even bother to compare it with the horrible pilot version from the dvd series set. Now remember this is the movie NOT the three hour pilot and because of that the story line of two of the major characters are completely different then in the series. And I'm not going to debate which of the two is better, only to say that this version has it's strong points and it shows them very well. The live action is razor sharp and for the first time the special effects are well truly special, with none of the fallouts or decomposer problems found in the complete series dvds. No you finally get to see effects that are as good, if not better then those found in the original Star Wars...check out the matt work, it's very clean and tight..good enough that I wouldn't doubt that a lot of the new CGI crowd would be impressed. The sound, while not 7.1 will also impress you, I had to back off the volume I usally play my movies at, as I thought my sud woofer might go terminal. One big problem with this release..there are NO EXTRAS...I'm sure Richard Hatch would have loved to do an audio track. That problem aside as a fan I couldn't be more pleased with this release and if you've never seen this show and are a sci fi fan...GIVE IT A TRY, you'll be glad you did.

Battlestar Galactica Rules
Battlestar Galactica(1978) is one of the best of the "Star Wars clones". It was Star Wars meets Wagon Train. The 2003 Sci-Fi Channel remake felt more like a bad Law and Order rip off! I don't want to sound mean, but the 2003 Sci-Fi Channel remake of Galactica was a stink bomb! THERE! I SAID IT! Stu Phillips(The Monkees, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls) composed and conducted a Korngold-style music score for Galactica. Ralph McQuarrie and John Dykstra of Star Wars fame worked on Galactica. The Twelve Colonies of Man are attacked and destroyed by the Cylons(a la the Attack on Pearl Harbor). The last surviving Battlestar helps the survivors search for a new home on the shining, blue, mythical planet known as Earth. Galactica creator Glen Larson added some of his own Lutheran beliefs into the show. The 1978 Battlestar Galactica movie is actually a recut of the pilot episode; it was beefed up with a Sensurround mix in 1979. It shows alternate takes such as the Cylons killing the villain Count Baltar. The shot of the camera floating over Apollo and Starbuck's Vipers was referenced in Independence Day(1996) when Steven Hiller and Jimmy are being chased by alien ships. Vivica A. Fox's Jasmine character also has a dog named "Boomer" in ID4. Battlestar Galactica was followed by a failed spin off called Galactica 1980. It only lasted ten episodes. On a Simpsons episode, you can the Cylons beating up C-3PO from Star Wars.Galactica stilll rules decades down the road.

I am very happy with this blu ray disk!
I have been a fan of the original Battlestar Galactica. When I saw the 1978 movie for sale, I had to buy it. I am from South Florida, U.S.A., and this blu ray works fine on my blu ray disk player. The sound is great! I was surprised that this blu ray has audio in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Brazilian Portuguese as well as subtitles in English, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Hungarian, Spanish, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, and Traditional Mandarin. If you are a fan of Battlestar Galactica, you will love this blu ray. If you are a fan of Battlestar Galactica and if you are a polyglot, you will love this blu ray.

Galactica in 35mm Film Quality!
I already owned the Complete Epic Series of Battlestar Galactica on DVD before this blu-ray came out. I got this blu-ray for one reason: To get a visually 35mm film-quality copy of the movie as it played in theaters when I saw it in 1979.The longer Battlestar Galactica Complete Epic Series DVD version of this movie was the pilot episode for the series known as "Saga of a Star World". It looks OK in the Complete Epic Series DVD, where it is in the full-frame 4x3 of the broadcast technology of 1978, and the picture on the Complete Epic Series DVD is as sharp as it can be, considering it was transferred from the old standard-definition broadcast tapes instead of film. I really wanted the epic look and feel of the original movie, transferred from the 1.85:1 theatrical 35mm film print. This blu-ray does not disappoint! The resolution is superb, you can really see the detail in the spaceship models as well as every pore in actors' faces, and the colors really pop! The reds of the Galactica's bridge, the blues inside the Cylon ships and the greens of the Techtronix computer displays are crystal clear! To user reviewers here who complain that the top-to-bottom crop is not "true" widescreen, let me set you all straight: This IS how theatrical 1.85:1 widescreen is achieved! Good quality transfer but no extras
Only four stars because...wait for it...No Extras!? Why no extras? Surely they knew collectors and nostalgia chasers (me) would enjoy extras? Otherwise, it’s a fine reproduction with good sound, though not Dolby 5.1 in my experience (again, why?). It is a good HD picture and seems to have transferred well to Blu-ray. The menu is symbolic and a little awkward to navigate. If you’ve seen the film then you know what you’re getting. I saw this in the cinema in the late 70s when I was a child. It looks majorly dated today but I love it and was still a little sad all these years later watching it again when Apollo lost his brother Zac to the Cylon attack and Adama put the grief of losing his youngest son to one side in order to repel the attackers. The cast are exceptional and it boasts some big names of the day. Ray Milland hams it up wonderfully, as does John Colicos as Baltar. There is something innocent about BSG that survives to this day. In a world where Star Wars has been over-cooked with effects seemingly trumping storylines (yes looking at you episode 7 and 8), BSG kept it simple and very Saturday-afternoon-matinee-like, without complicating the core storyline (yes looking at you episode 1 and 2). I love the 70s hairstyles, makeup and fashions that are ubiquitous in this movie. I think the uniforms of the Galactica’s warriors are still very sharp. However, the real scene stealers costumes-wise are the Cylon warriors. They are still as menacing as ever and demonstrate how merciless they actually are when attacking little Boxy with a gladius (Roman sword) and of course, when executing Baltar after he’d helped betray humanity. I watched some of the modern BSG episodes and was disappointed the Cylons had lost their menacing ‘look’ from this movie. I’d really liked to have seen extras with “behind the scenes” clips and “making of” documentaries etc. Maybe next time?

Rose TInted Glasses Reveiew - OMG HAHAHAHAHAHAHA IM SO HAPPYNon-Rose Tinted Glasses Review - OMG....IM STILL SOO HAPPY!!!Ok, maybe the above isnt so subjective. However, with a show like this, it really is going to depend on why you are looking buying this.If you are someone of a certain age, who watched this when it was first shown, you'll enjoy the trip down memory lane, regardless of the obvious flaws. If you are someone of a millennial age, you’ll either consider this B-movie trash or love its eccentricities. Here are the simple version pro’s, mediums, and cons -Fantastic music scoreFantastic castingMedium Special EffectsMedium PlotMedium DirectingPoor Special EffectsPoor PlotYou might notice, I’ve doubled up there on some stuff. Quite simple, some of the plot was actually quite well done, some was quite dire. Some of the special effects were actually close to Star Wars quality, a lot weren’t.Here’s the thing, suspend disbelief, watch this. For the price, your not going to be losing out much if you don’t like it. But you might be surprised, and like it very much. It’s very 70’s unlike Star Wars, but in some ways, that lends to its charm. Some of the actors are quite fantastic, and some are fantastically cheesy. In the good way though. If you like Sci-fi, you should watch this, at the very least for historical purposes. If you like it, you can watch the full TV series. In a way, there is an element of a Firefly forerunner in the series. The second series, not so much to be fair, but watch it anyhow. Oh, and if you loved watching the film Mission Galactica, its a collection of 3 episodes from the TV series with some editing. Sadly we wont get the original re-edit on DVD/Bluray now, but you can at least get the crux of it from the series!

Saga of A Star World
The warship Battlestar Galactica leads the surviving members of the human race on a quest to find the mythical planet Earth after the colonies of man are nearly destroyed by the evil Cylons. The first 3 episodes of the classic 70's Battlestar Galactica TV series released as a feature length movie in cinemas in the UK and across Europe to cash in on Star Wars is cheesier than the cheesiest cheese sandwich but good fun even if at times it does feel like a Star Wars rip off with plenty of action and hammy performances from series leads Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict and Lorne Greene with guest stars Jane Seymour and John Colicos. Probably for fans only but fans will love it.

Relive the early 80's!
I remember watching this on TV way back in the 80's, but my memory was limited to the end sequence with the honeycomb-like tombs - it obviously traumatised me back then in ways I had repressed! Anyways, this blu-ray really does deliver. The transfer looks great and it sounds really good. Its presented in widescreen - and I believe they've cropped the original pilot episode to achieve this, though you don't really notice any cropping while watching (infact in one scene I caught glimpse of a boom mic top centre, can only imagine on the tv pilot how that looked!) It really does look great though, and all the effects seem to have been left untouched, nothing looks like its been tampered with.I'd completely forgotten just how many famous people were in this - Dirk Benedict, Jane Seymour, Lorne Green, even the kid from Never ending story!)

I wouldnt say original and best because to be honest
I wouldnt say original and best because to be honest, the reimagined 2000’s series completely and utterly blew this dated hokum out of the water. But... this was the one I watched as a kid when it was originally released, and for that, like the original series of Star Trek, it will always be a favourite piece of nostalgia. But only this one, the original movie. The rest of the series was utter utter dross.
