A Gift to My Children: A Father's Lessons for Life and Investing

A Must Read for Fathers Everywhere
I originally came across this book at my local library while looking at investment and business books. I'm a proud father with the number one goal of raising my daughter to be an independant, confident young woman and I'm always interested to see how people I look up to raise their children. I've picked up a few new ideas over the last couple years and was looking forward to learning something from this book. I was not disappointed.A gift to my children is packed full of general life lessons from the mind of a successful global investor with a passion for life. It touches on subjects such as boys and ethics, explains hidden dangers that young women seldom notice, and promotes thinking for yourself and not taking someone's advise just because they are a professional. I bought a copy for my cousin whom just became a father a little over a month ago, and I have a copy I intend to give my daughter once she is a little older. All in all, I feel any good father would enjoy this book.

A book for all ages and all sages
This is a marvelous book to own and pass down to your children and your children's children. It is filled with sage advice and investing advice as well. Written as a story rather than dry "preaching" it is a fun and easy read. This is a must for every library. I am sharing the book at work. People are mesmerized as I read. Well written and compelling.

It is exactly what the title says - a fathers lesson to a small kid
I bought the book because of all the simple advices the author gives to his daughter (like be ethical, save, don't use calculator for math, etc) that you will find in any review of this book that is longer than mine. Was hoping to find even more things like that in this book, but in this case its just like any average Hollywood comedy where all jokes are packed in the trailer - its all in the reviews. No surprises there then. It does not get any better in terms of the main plot, as it's a very general story of authors own life, trading and travels. Yes, it is a story of a very interesting life, but I think that a lot of people who will buy the book will know it already. If not, then its also in a review. So, just for reading the text and taking it very seriously, the book is a bit pointless. The area where it exceeds expectations is in emotions that it delivers. I'm not a sensitive type of person and usually read books about economics or markets. Guess this is why I found this book in the first place. Yet I know that there are some books where you can feel the emotions that the author has put into writing it and this book is definitely one of them. And the emotions don't get any more positive than those of a father giving a personal lesson to his kids that he really cares about. For this reason alone I think that this book is worth reading. It is a very short book anyway. So to sum up - its just what the title says - a lesson that a father gives to a small child. Yes, there is a message in his text and yes, sometimes a kid would remember it. Yet in most cases its fare more about the feel than the message, as is this book...

Excellent Reading
I would recommend this book to anyone for reading as is common sense advice goes beyond just children. It was kind of funny to read this because there was just so much practical common sense enclosed in these pages that I found myself wishing I had Jim Rogers as my father, no offense dad.

Patriarch Viewpoint
"A Gift To My Children" by Jim Rogers provides some quality insight from the author through the perspective of tailoring it to his daughters. There is helpful information such as refusing to let age stop a person from going after their goals, living life with at least one main dream in mind, and striving to work towards personal dreams regardless of the external circumstances that may emerge. "A Gift To My Children" by Jim Rogers is a quick read and is good for those who enjoy motivational tidbits.

A decent book but Rogers out of his league with his pontification
For investment and money grubbing folk, it gets outright silly at some points. What irked me was his bizarre over simplification of investing based on the superficial attributes of some countries.Apparently India is a bad place to invest because the roads have potholes. Yet the Indian ETF was one of the star performers of the year 2014.Apparently Brazil is an ideal place to invest because of its production of commodities such as sugar and iron ore, and because sugar can be used to produce ethanol which at the time of writing seemed to be a great business yet in 2017 the year of me writing this - 8 years later is clearly not given what has transgressed since the writing of this book.Mr.Rogers is not as prescient as he seems. Brazil was one of the worst hit countries during the commodity glut of 2016.Mr.Rogers has a colorful history, but I'd be wary about taking his crystal ball seriously. Otherwise it's dandy.

My Gift to My Son
For me, Jim Rogers is one of those rare people who bring sanity and clear perspective to the world of investing. While surfing for more written material by him, I found this book. Once I learned of its content, I bought a copy for my son Michael (age 25 - just starting his career)and gave it to him for Christmas (2009). In it I inscribed "Good advice, stated better than I could, so I bought you a copy - Enjoy." While talking to him on the phone in late January, 2010 he mentioned that he is just devouring it - and he hates to read! I kept a copy for myself and look forward to discussing its content with him during the months and years to come. That's alot of value for the price!

I'm awfully fond of life advice books from old folks
I'm awfully fond of life advice books from old folks, especially those who have figured themselves out and earned success on their own terms.Jim Rogers roams from personal advice (know yourself; study hard; be true to yourself) to capsule takes on various countries (positive on china; negative on russia). It's a bit disorganized, and that's a minus, and it's very short, and that's actually a plus. I'm happy for the time I spent with this book.

Very Mislaeding - This is an audio book!
If you are looking to buy a paper back copy of this book, don‘t buy this because it is not what you think. This is in fact an audio MP3 CD! The ”MP3 Audio“ wordings are so inconspicuous that it feels to me an intention by the seller to mislead buyers. Beware.
