Easy to set up, easy to use, flexible receiver for home theater and gaming.
I got this to replace an eight-year-old failing Yamaha for my 5.1 surround sound system, used for home theater, cable HDTV viewing, and playing games.Set up is simple and straightforward. Plug in the receiver, plug an HDMI cable to the HDMI out on the receiver, and into an HDMI in on the TV, turn them both on, select the TV input, and follow the onscreen instructions. The font and graphics are blocky and low res for a receiver clearly intended for home theater applications, but it is perfectly functional. Some of the setup is pretty basic stuff, like attaching the speaker wire, but other aspects, such as verifying an internet network connection and each of the HDMI inputs is quite helpful. This receiver is intended for mid-level consumer use and designed to be user-friendly, and it does both of these things well. The 90w/channel into 8 ohm speakers is more than enough power for a typical home theater setup, and the 7.2 setup is very flexible, allowing the user to use the extra two speakers for separate back and side surround, for height in front, or for zone 2 sound to another room.Having pre-outs for two subwoofers likewise is beneficial for a subwoofer and satellite system, providing extra flexibility. Using two subwoofers allows for "stereo" subwoofer effects by placing a pair of subs equidistant in the front or rear of the room. Ordinarily, with a sub and satellite system, you're faced with the problem of where to set the bypass. Set it low, typically at 80hz, for LFE, and you cannot hear the direction from which the sound is coming, allowing you to put it anywhere in the room without any negative effects. Audyssey, however, as with most automated setup systems, will set the crossover at a much higher level if you have small satellites, choosing 200hz during my setup. This means frequencies 200hz and below are sent to the subwoofer, and above are sent to the satellites. With an off center placement, this can cause problems, as sounds become directional at that level, meaning you can hear that some of the bass is coming from (in my case), the front left corner of the room, which can throw off the sound balance for surround sound effects. This means you either have to live with that, or change the crossover to a lower level, losing some of the punch to the bass, but also keeping subwoofer output nondirectional - you hear and feel it, but not where it's coming from.I chose a compromise, manually resetting the crossover to 120hz and then manually setting the front speakers to "large", which has the effect of sending low frequencies to both the sub and the fronts. This mitigates the directionality of the off-center subwoofer without losing the punch you want from the bass. With two subs, you get another option - "stereo" subwoofers. It's not actually stereo, as the same sound is going to both, but it does allow you to put one sub to each side of the viewing area, eliminating the directionality problem of a high crossover. Two sub outputs also gives you more flexibility regarding size. With two subs outputting LFE, you can get a much greater volume without having to get a gigantic speaker.Usability is very good. I found making a few manual adjustments to what Audyssey did easy to find and to manage. The quick select buttons at the bottom of the remote and on the front of the receiver are a fantastic feature. After you have the settings for a given input adjusted just right, holding down the appropriate quick select button saves the input and settings. Afterwards, all you have to do is press the button and the receiver switches to the associated input with all associated settings exactly as you left them. Because different inputs require different settings - my PS4, for example, plays back much louder than my cable or music inputs - this is a wonderful timesaver, enabling you to set up the settings for each input only once. Most days I only ever use the power and quick select buttons on the remote. This isn't the receiver you want for a high end dedicated Home Theater - you won't find one of those at this price - but it's a great deal for the price for your basic consumer level home theater or gaming setup for those who want something more than your basic theater in a box.

AVRS700w Screen Dead in 2 days !!!!
Refurbished Unit Arrived on Friday.Minimal Use, Hours of set up.The display on the unit (ON THE RECEIVER ITSELF) is completely dead. Yes it works on the TV but what's the point--radio tuner, internet radio...all work on receiver screen.Used dimmer switch (won't fix it) tried other settings, tried factory reset....Bought it from Amazon. Back it goes. Replacement ASAP I hope.Worried about this from other reviews.Just got a refurbished AVR s700W delivered to my door. Many will encounter a problem with PS3 ( Playstation 3) connections. I did. BUT it works great with the PS3.Upon connecting using Plug and Pray, it did not work. I had the HDMI from the PS3 to the Receiver in the Game HDMI input. The receiver goes to the TV.2) I had to un-power everything (including the receiver) to let everything chill (recalibrate)3) I plugged in the receiver, the PS3 and the TV. (the TV and Receiver are already successfully linked by HDMI). The PS3 and the Receiver are not.4)) I turned the Receiver and TV on.5) I used the Denon assisted set up tier (on the on screen menu the Denon offers) to simply guide me again through button pushing (it's not necessary, in setup there's an option for input6) I selected the GAME HDMI input on the onscreen menu. On my machine it gave two options . The first time I set it up it offered regular HDMI, then the machine updated itself...then it seemed to only offer HDMI 4. After much reading I just decided it's all I've got as an option so use it. I did--I selected HDMI 4 as my input type7) I put my HDMI cable across the PS3 to the Receiver.8) I turned on the PS3 , waited a few seconds to let it do it's thing. PS3s do take 12-15 seconds to get their groove on.9) I pushed the word NEXT on the Onscreen prompts.10) Like a surge of relief, there was my very familiar PS3.The saga took about 3 hours....I also successfully ran the Digital Audio from the TV to the Receiver. It seems critical that you tell the Denon each typology of connection prior to making them OR you have to go back to zero and start again, potentially power down for god knows what reason. But it works- so before you test cables that likely you knew work, waste time surfing for 1.5 hours, trolling the manual, just power down and unplug everything (it may simple relax your nerves) and start again as the auto set up says. I do think the upgrade to the firmware may (i stress may) have helped.;One downer on the PS3 to this Denon receiver, because it's HDMI 4, the on screen display for the receiver won't show for volume and options so you will have to look at the receiver to make any sound tweaks.I've tested everything except 3d Blue ray through the Ps3 through the Denon.I tried to use a pocket drive (western digital thing) through the USB port on the front. it recognized there is a drive but would not let me cycle through directories on the drive. Perhaps it only will work with official MP3 players or MP3 music storage devices....this was disappointing but the slot and remote are branded with IPOD first (suggesting music players).Otherwise all the sound capacity I could want....the online manual is a bear and not intuitive as a web resource. You can land in it and never find the deeper dive stuff (the link that is on your paper work) or you can tunnel through Google and land on pages you never thought existed.I used the audiysis calibrate thing --worked fine.Tone control for bass and treble but equilazation I could not find beyond this. Of course audiophiles would add an equalizer I might recommend that too.......Great peace of equipment for the refurbish price.I was yard sailing for a 5.1 or 7.1 receiver and came to the fast conclusion that buying a used receiver that was over 3 years old was an exercise in futility. I don't watch hours of TV each day or week, so in my mind used is fine. Most US citizens watch 3 hours a day thus a used media receiver has been hot and bothered for years..buy new or refurbished components folks..unless it's a device where you know the usage pattern.I look forward to learning to use this ...ah yes..the back button is key and critical.....moves you all in and out of menus. Options provides differing options for each menu key area (blue tooth or Cable etc).It did freeze in some areas --internet radio--seems if the station or subscribed chanel was hinky it would freeze that particular option.Chromecast worked fine--just assign an HDMI.So PS3 folks, before freaking--try a solid step by step of above. Honest it took me 3 hours to just simply power off and do it straight by the books. I wonder if I had recycled power earlier if it would have worked.

Love it - but wish they'd fix the Pandora interface
Awesome sound. Would give it a 5 rating if it weren't for the issues with Pandora. It won't interface with my Pandora account (it did work for 3 months when I first bought it). They keep saying they are working on the issue but it's been 9 months and still won't work. It has Bluetooth so I can use my iPhone to play the Pandora. Problem is there is limited distance on the Bluetooth. I can go just outside my garage door and I lose the signal. With the sync directly to the receiver, I could walk to the neighbors house and control the playlist and the sound.....totally awesome. I have outdoor speakers hooked up to zone 2 and live being outside with total control. Other than that I love the receiver.

Great receiver. Has a warm sound and lots of features.VERY Loud, and stays crisp at high volumes. I haven't been able to take it past 0dB!Only 2 of the HDMI inputs can handle 4k.

Not an exceptional product, but OK.
Audio is very good.Setup is simple.Configuration capabilities is weak, firmware closed and very limited. Therefore the unit ages not so well. Assume you'll end up using it only for the amplification capability, and perhaps as a matrix switch. The other interfaces are not interesting.User your (smart) TV has an entertainment hub, then plug this receiver as the ARC receiver. Don't use the Denon software, it does not work well. The unit came working, but the front panel died within a few months. Warranty paid for the repairs, OK, but still... Will it be tough?
