Harry Potter Knitting Magic: The official Harry Potter knitting pattern book

Great book and not solely for Potter fans
I haven't actually knitted up any of the patterns yet, but this book is crammed with oodles of scarves, mittens and hats. They all look great fun and I can't wait to try some of them. I was a bit dubious about buying this book as it isn't cheap and doesn't give a lot of detail on what is included, but I am very glad that I did. There are loads of projects, all beautifully illustrated and the detail looks fine. I would be more than happy to make some of these up just because they are great patterns, regardless of the HP link and definitely plan to do so. There are 27 projects at varying levels of skill (which is indicated) and although a few are more quirky, like a knitted Hedwig, for the main part they are practical and wearable. It's a hardback book too, so not likely to fall apart too soon, although i may photocopy pages when i actually use the patterns, so i can scribble on them without ruining the book. Highly recommended, both for the Potterhead in the family and anyone else that would like a nice garment as a gift.

Much better than I expected!
I received my copy as a preorder this morning, and by the evening have already ordered another for my daughter-in-law!Sometimes official franchise craft books are a big disappointment, but this one definitely is not! It has such a variety of patterns, some of which are absolutely stunning (Hedwig!) It’s a beautiful looking, well presented book too. And it doesn’t contain 50 pages on How to Knit, which most knitters will be really pleased about, I’m sure! Probably not the book for a total beginner then, but it could certainly inspire someone to pick up their needles and learn, before tackling these patterns. Now which one to cast on first?!Just to add, after reading one review above, the yarns the items are made with are from US companies (some of which ARE available in the UK), but the type of yarn used (DK, Aran, etc) is very clearly stated so don’t let this put you off!

Keep away from manipulative children
This was bought for my mum as a mothers day gift with the hope she would take the hint and make some of the items for the apple of here eye (me) This backfired when I opened it to see how beautiful the book is and my own daughter squealed at what she wanted, then made a bet that I would not be able to do it myself. So 24 hours later and 2 trips to a craft shop i now have enough knitting needles to hold up a shop with, a few sheeps worth of wool, with an order the size of a woolie friend on the way, a video history on youtube to make an old lady jealous and cramp in my hand.. such bad bad cramp.

Beautiful patterns
This book is amazing. I love the presentation and trivia, as well as the patterns being a great mix of movie replicas and inspired designs. As a strong intermediate knitter that loves learning and improving skills, I find most books pander to the newbie and are filled with over simplified patterns that as a consequence look horrible; I'm glad the publisher didn't shy away from advanced techniques - I'm excited to attempt them in the near future. This book exceeded my expectations. On the flip side, I think this book would be terrible for a new knitter as the entry-level patterns are boring, and Harry Potter inspired dishcloths and mug cosies can be found free online, though this book has a great collection of confident-beginner and intermediate patterns which I think can be attempted after just one or two projects with the help of YouTube. What let's this book down is there's no recommended ease or anything to help with which size to knit with the sweater patterns. It's a complete guessing game. It's a shame such a small detail makes such a big difference in the ability to replicate these beautiful designs. Otherwise the instructions are brilliantly detailed and have a wide range of sizing - 30" to 68" finished bust.

Mistake on cowl
I am an intermediate knitter and I did this pattern to the stitch a good few times and each time it ended up like the bottom sample on the left hand side. So I tried doing it again the way I felt seemed right and it worked (see top example). The mistake is on row 23 instead of 2/2 RC the second time do another 2/2 LC, and on row 25 2/2 RPC then 2/2 LPC and repeat 2/2 RPC 2/2 LPC. If that helps anyone I hope it does. There are a few patterns wrong in this book easily fixed if you know what you are doing, but they really should of closely examined the book before making copies and selling it. Other then that it is a really nice knitting book.

It's magic!
This has got to be my favourite knitting book of all time. I've had this in my possession about a month now and I'm still gushing over it!All the patterns are extremely well thought out with wonderful references to the scenes of the films from where each garnered their inspiration. I have at least 2/3 of the patterns in my ravelry queue, with 2 started and the yarn for a third ready and waiting.Over all, I'm blown away. This is the perfect knitting book for any knitter who is a fan of the HP fandom.

So many possibilities
I haven't tried anything yet, but the wealth of options makes me giddy! Hedwig looks so cute. There's a Deathly Hallows shawl with beads that looks like a good challenge and is very 'Geek chic'. Of course the house themed sweaters, scarves and socks are good easy giftable items. Actually, it's got a lot of good basic patterns that every knitter will likely want, cardigan, sweater, scarf, mittens, gloves, socks. Can't wait for the second volume.

Wands up! The stars have aligned!
The estimable Tanis Gray assembling and leading a cast of lauded knitting designers...Harry Potter film trivia and behind-the-scenes jewels provided directly by Warner Bros...Insight Editions pledging to plant two trees to replace each tree used in manufacturing...The stars have truly aligned to present this enchanting Knitting Magic book!I pre-ordered this book at the earliest opportunity, and my every expectation was met or exceeded upon its delivery! The beautiful book itself is quite a good value with 28 patterns on more than 200 stunningly photographed pages, and would become a treasured coffee table book for any Harry Potter fan dreaming of future knitting adventures! But let's put it to its good and intended use, shall we? Even the book's binding technique (which allows it to lie completely flat when open) and the pleasing weight and gloss of the paper (substantial but not overly heavy) combine to make this a practical and usable pattern book. The 28 captivating knitting patterns are well and thoroughly detailed, covering home decor to toys to accessories to garments. Some pattern designs are taken directly from the films, and others are fanciful and delightful interpretations from scenes, characters and objects in the films. Each design is introduced with background notes, and a knitting skill level is assigned to each project. Size inclusivity for garments is rare in pattern books because of all the extra and detailed design work required, and here a diverse adult size range from XS to 6XL is presented! But there's more, making this book a wonderful reading experience rather than merely an exceptional pattern book. I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the Harry Potter films by savoring the "Behind the Magic" segments presented with each knitting design, and seeing the film sketches and concept artwork included in this comprehensive book.Part of the fun was the difficult task of ranking the projects in the order I want to knit them up. Accio needles and fiber! Mrs. Weasley's bewitched needles be banished -- I want to enjoy every single stitch of this exceedingly magical adventure!

Great book, different patterns and difficulties (reseña en Español)
