Good writing
I actually finished this book in a world of books that get rave reviews and are terrible. The bar is way too low nowadays. It's not like the days when publishers evaluated books before taking them on, or I could go to a book store and read some of the middle of the book at my choosing (not just the first chapter). (I know I still can do this with many books, but the bookstore isn't close to me). This took me to Florida which is always a good thing. I loved the characters. One reviewer said it's not as exciting as his other Doc Ford books, which makes me want to buy one of those. I'm looking for excitement and thrillers. I give it a four, as I actually kept reading it and found it interesting, but it's not a five for me. I can't put down fives. I can't tell you how many books I've stopped and deleted, then went back and read the bad reviews and they were exactly how I felt. This wasn't one of them.

A true RWW classic
I've read a number of Mr White's books both fiction and non-fiction. They rarely disappoint. I am very familiar with SW Florida and have family in or have been to the places he writes about. That, attracts me to his novels. I can also relate to his perspective on most of the underlying themes. His stories are intellectual enough without being boring and adventurous without being over-the-top. Fun beach read or cabin fever escape.

Captiva is . . . well . . . captivating!
It's all there, what I expect from a Doc Ford story. I'm in South Florida with some neat people––and some frighteningly mean ones. Hard-working, fun-loving residents of the bay. And on an obscure island, good but clannish locals, suspicious of outsiders. And some ruthless people who don't care who they hurt to get what they want. I see real people, some wealthy, some barely hanging on and understandably resentful of those who would walk all over them without a thought.I get to watch Ford at work with his sea creatures and feel bad right along with him when some of the come to harm. Oh, and I get to ride in his boat. I get the feel of the bay, the mangroves, the trees and flowers, the creatures, the sea spray.White treats the net ban rule well, showing various aspects. Yes we need the ocean protected or it will be fished out. But what about those whose jobs and way of life are destroyed? Allowing netting by locals only sounds good, but how is such a rule enforced? No easy answers, just as in real life.Doc is clever in how he gets one crook to fess up––would make a great scene in a movie. This story has harrowing aspects in the horrible things that happen to those Doc cares for the most. Oh, but revenge is sweet when he cleverly consigns one murderer to a fate worse than death.Hard to put this book down, even on a second read.

Great Read
As a fifth generation Floridian I really enjoyed this book. It described a region where I have lived for 40 odd years. It appealed to my since of place with adventures which seemed familiar to me. It reminded me of John D. MacDonalds colorful novels. It provided me enjoyment far surpassing its low cost.Congratulations to R. W. White for a superb tale.

Highly improbable storyline
Book was clearly written for US anti-Castro mindset. Too much improbability, too much political self righteousness for my liking.
