The chairs are very sturdy and easy to paint. I sanded, used a primer (2 coats) and Benjamin Moore Advanced paint and used a roller to apply both where possible. I used a tipping brush where needed (for crevices and smoothing to the paint for each coat). The chairs seat higher than my former ones, which enables me to forego using seat cushions. They are also a substantial weight, but move easily with felt added to the bottom of their legs. Though I prefer stain over paint, I used paint as these chairs sit in a very sunny room and are subject to fading, and I needed more contrast to go well with my table. Their seats are a bit hard, but for the amount of time spent in them, they're comfortable. And they do have a slight carve out on the seat. I purchased the assembly package, but once removed from the box, I saw their backs were already assembled. Only the seat and the legs needed assembly. I highly recommend these chairs as they are quality, but advise that the assembly is easy enough for anyone to perform.

You can take them off. These chairs are beautiful and very strudy. I haven't stained them yet but i'm very excited to see the finished product.
