Rainbow Raised
Outside of the Re-Mastered LA-Mix version of this Album, and the Munich 77 concert, I know of few CDs/-recordingswhere the audio is so brilliantly great. The best thing about the Deluxe versions of these albums, is that it is thenext best thing to getting the Japanese pressings. The German discs that I have bought so far have packaging madein other parts of the EU, but the discs are the key usually. The presentation has great packaging, pictures, and asuperb booklet. The New York Mix is not the greatest all-round mix, but if you want a mix that centres on theguitar on vocals, then the NY mix works. The best all round mix is the LA mix since it has the NY sound with thedepth of the Bass into the mix. The Rough mix on disc two comes very close to being as good as the LA mix, butfails on some level. If you want a great audio experience, put these discs on a 5.1 so that the channels will fleshout, even though the mix is stereo ( I know that, okay certain persons) but I have software that uses the 5.1channel to the optimum on the PC, and you do something similar on a TV surround sound. All in all these RAINBOWdiscs are great. Overall my favorite all over sound is LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL, but this is still excellent, andthe package is great for fans, and the Booklet tells part of the story for this CD, a great product, and definitelythe LA Mix makes a great Car CD for those who need that in their travels.Just a minor note; The sounds you can hear developing in RAINBOW were starting to come around in the latter part of DEEP PURPLE, and as the Booklet notes, Blackmore learning the Cello helped him expand his composing skills and find a sound for some of his tonal variations that were changing. Ever the temperamental artist, it was probably almost inevitable that Blackmore wind up playing in his current band, BLACKMORES NIGHT which has some skillful guitar work as well as brilliant ideas.

a deluxe release with several mixes and demos. by a classic band
this gives you a lot demos and two mises of the same album. the great Ronnie james dio is the leas singer here. The band lays down a lot of hard progressive rock here. And it has many powerful songs on it. however , as much as I love this era , the band that was to come is more to my liking , great cd's like 'down to earth' are more enjoyable to me. That doesn't mean that this isn't great. This is cool music. This deluxe version does not have any unreleased outtakes though Like the other deluxe editions. It's still worth it if you love this band! And they were very good back then. The new york mix sounds the best to me! The demos sound like demos and the la mix is more muddy to me. But it's good too. So that's what you get here. A classic band doing prog hard rock metal stuff. And it's done by super talented people to say the least. There isn't a bad song but nothing here to me is as exciting as what came later or earlier. Still it's Rainbow and that's never a bad thing.

The Band's Best
To me, this is the quintessential Rainbow album. The image, the lineup, the whole package on this was to me the most identifiable work the band ever did, but that doesn't mean it isn't without its faults. For starters, it's short on songs. I know back then you only had so much time on a record, but I think they could have squeezed at least one more track on the album. That being said, what DID make it was some of their best stuff. Opening with the exotic "Tarot Woman" which breaks into a huge vocal from Ronnie James Dio, this album throws down the gauntlet and it doesn't let up. The two epics on the album are some of the best songs of the era, namely "Stargazer" with backing from the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra which still sends chills up my spine whenever I hear it; Cozy Powell's drums propel the band forward as Blackmore and Dio dance all over the track with Tony Carey's keyboards covering all of what's left. It may be short on tracks but it's still a classic. As for the bonus stuff, it's kind of lame. The only thing of note is the extended version of "Stargazer"; the rest of it are all just re-mixes and a few rough demos.
