A Page Turner
This books is a great analysis of what made the American Justice System what it is today. It shows what influences formed the current public policy making America a leader of developed countries in incarcerating it's citizens. This book is a page turner and is easily digestible even for someone who does not have a lot of political knowledge. It brings to light the dark motives of a a history forgotten by many in a society trying to move forward and away from racism and shows how our history still with us and largely influential in our policies and continuing to decide fates.

It amazes me that graphic books (what were called comic books back in the day) have evolved to where they can capture the most difficult subject matter in a way that is both respectful and approachable. Where The New Jim Crow, which covers the same topic, is data-dense and analysis-thick, this approach covers a lot of the same ground with concrete and visual arguments.

Very important book, though not as good as Alexander's similarly-themed one.
The illustrations are...OK, I guess. Kind of studentish, but I hear many people really like this style. The text contains most of the important facts regarding the war on minorities that is now more relevant than ever. Ultimately, however, I found Michelle Alexander's 'The New Jim Crow' to be better - both more interesting to read and more explanatory.

Wow.
First of all, the physical book is high quality and came perfectly in tactNow about the meat, it was heavy information to digest. Statistics were easy to understand due to the illustrations

read this book
If you want to know why America has one of the highest rates of incarceration in the world, read this book. Told in a readable, powerful way, along with the fantastic illustrations, this book will make you think about our criminal justice system in a whole new way. It's difficult to capture the history, sociology, politics, and cultural issues in one story. This book does it.

The New Jim Crow information, illustrated
The graphic art is like political art. Lots of facts and figures. It is a repeat of the presentation of The New Jim Crow. If some of the pictures in the book can be scanned, they might help out with a PowerPoint. I only read it once. The text is left brain presentation, kind of dry. I would not think a teenager would find it engaging, but anyone who has experienced prison would probably find it affirming of their experience in prison.
