This started on fire. We got it in April and it is now December 12th. The surge protector didn't work and it just slowly kept burning until we could figure out where the smell was coming from. My family and home were at risk because of it's failure to work.

This surge protector was only 4 months old when it failed our year old tv. Within minutes of the power surge I smelled a smell of burning electrical wires and realized it was coming from our tv. The tv was no longer operable along with our sound bar. I jumped through the extensive hoops set out by Tripp Lite and had to spend $12 to send my surge protector to them for testing. Surprise! They tested the surge protector and said they would not honor their warranty because the surge protector didn't show signs of a surge. I even had documentation from our electric company verifying there had been an outage and subsequent surge just minutes before the smell of burning wires. Tripp Lite does not test the surge protector with an objective 3rd party. The testing was done 'in-house' so of course they are going to find that the surge protector didn't fail. I wanted to share my experience with this company so that others can make an informed decision. All of the surge protectors in our home were Tripp Lite because I thought I could trust them. Now I will have the added expense of replacing them all. They did not stand behind their product and I'm out almost $800. A quick google search shows that this has happened to others. Each person's experience with the warranty/claim process was exactly like mine. The customer sent in the surge protector (as requested by Tripp Lite) and no 'problem' was found and therefore no warranty was honored.

Poor construction. Serious Fire Hazard.
Poor construction. Serious Fire Hazard.Only the connections on the small circuit board were soldered, and the neutral wire was missed completely. All of the remaining connections are only spot welded and not very well.It is my opinion that all of these should be recalled for being a serious fire hazard.

Does not incorporate Tripp Lites fail safe mode. Recommend purchase of Tripp Lite Isobar 2 instead
I contacted Tripp Lite regarding this The Tripp Lite 1 Outlet Portable Surge Protector Power Strip, because of the number of reviews posted to Amazon that report overheating and burning associated with this product. Tripp Lite was not able to provide any documentation to specify that The Tripp Lite 1 Outlet Portable Surge Protector Power Strip interrupts power to the connected devices and/or provide any other safe mode of failing when the surge protective element has been consumed. On the other hand, the Tripp Lite Isobar 2 Tripp Lite Isobar 2 Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip, Direct Plug In, Metal, Lifetime Limited Warranty & $10,000 INSURANCE (ISOBLOK2-0) incorporates fail safe thermal fusing and will cut off power to all receptacles when it is no longer able to perform power surge suppression. I returned to Amazon the The Tripp Lite 1 Outlet Portable Surge Protector Power Strip and purchased instead the Tripp Lite Isobar 2. I believe the Tripp Lite Tripp Lite Isobar 2 is well worth the extra cost.

Work Great!
These things work! Had a power surge or somesort. Anything not on these was toast. Anything plugged into these is fully operational.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND. Did not last long enough.
After a little over a year and half and it stopped working and is leaking something out of it.I can not get the tripp lite company to reply to the email via their website. It also does not like to stay in the main plug when removing another plug from the unit.I DO NOT RECOMMEND this item.

perfect power strip
What more is there to say. It has an always on plug which is handy for things you always want on but want to turn everything else off. The quality of materials is high, and the cord is long at 6 feet so easy to use in many situations. The best thing about this one is the recessed on/off toggle switches for each plug. You never knew you need them so bad until you have a plug to big and it wont fit into a power strip as it keeps turning off the plug outlet as the oversized plug adapter hits the on/off toggle button. Also it is UL listed which gave me a bit more comfort buying it instead of a cheaper one not UL listed.I am using mine for my fish tanks and doing water changes and maintenance is much easier. I just stitch off the filter and heater using their toggle switches and back on when done. No more fussing pulling cords or turning off master switch and then cannot use light on aquarium, or desk lamp, or anything else you could come up with.I may end up buying another one for my tv/dvr/playstaion combo i have.

Half of the outlets are unusable
Tripp Lite 12-outlet surge protector arrived today. I was excited since I'd done a lot of research and they seemed like a good choice for home theater and computer protection, especially due to the low clamping voltage.Firstly, it arrived scratched. There are a bunch of marks on the bottom of the device as well as some on the sides. Not a promising start; I wouldn't mind superficial scratches except that this was sold to me as new and already looks like a return.OK, so now that I suspect it's a return I immediately check all the outlets. Turns out that all the side outlets work fine, the USB outlets work fine. But - and this is a big but - HALF of the outlets aren't working! All the ones in the middle will plug in to the point that the device being plugged in activates, but not so that the plug sits flush with the surge protector. Aside from half of the 12 outlets being unusable, this is extremely unsafe! You should never have to fight with an outlet to try and get a plug in, and I was fighting with all of the middle outlets on this for several minutes each, trying several different plugs, before giving it up as defective.I suspect there's a misalignment inside the device but I'm not opening it to check as that would probably void the warranty (though I suppose it's a moot point since I won't be using this). I'm not sure whether to blame Tripp Lite or Amazon in this instance - this was sold to me by Amazon as a new product, so either it's counterfeit/returned or Tripp Lite's quality control isn't very good. Either way, I wish I'd stuck with Belkin.

Practical idea, some poor design feature. Useful for some applications.
I like the concept of this device but not the implementation. It seems that the designers were so happy with themselves for the switch-per-outlet idea that they decided no effort was necessary to design the unit in a way that it is practical to use.The power cord is installed in the most basic and least useful way, poking out the end of the unit with no rotational ability so that if your power outlet is not located in a convenient location in relation to where you want your powerbar, it will be difficult to place. The bigger issue for me is the wall mount holes: they are too small for standard screw heads. I will have to drill out the holes on this unit and hope that the slot itself is wide enough to accommodate the screw heads. In addition, the wall mount holes do not allow for horizontal installation of the unit. I mount most of my power bars to the wall and I'm not sure that I'll be able to do that with this one, which will make it useless for me for what i bought it for. If I can't mount it I'll change my rating to 1 star.I'm disappointed that someone came up with such a good idea but designed the form so poorly. There are well designed units out there (you listening APC?) that would be great with this switch-per-outlet feature. The above said, if you plan on keeping this unit on the floor or desk and don't care where the power outlet is in relation to this unit, then it may be a decent choice for you.

it's one of the safest ones, most of the other ''protectors'' start working at 300 volts so your apparels will be subjected to spikes up to the ratings(300 volts and above). One person approached me and asked me if there was anything to do regarding his fridge, it's the third time he is replacing the electronic component due to spikes in his 120/240 supply; he told me also he had it ''protected'' by a surge protector;I checked the protector and it starts ''protecting '' at 500 volts(no wonder his fridge system blew up). If you check the Spike Cube clampingvoltage(voltage value the protector will start working) it shows a value of 150 volts which means anything above 150 volts will be diverted so it will not harm electrical components

Individual power switches are great to have
This surge suppressor power bar comes with seven electric plug in outlets, one which is “power always on” and the six others that each have their own switch that can control the on and off function for it. There is also a master switch to turn power off or on for the entire power bar. There is a reset button. LCD lights shows the active powered area (power bar on, and for each active plug either the “always on” and/or each control switch outlet). There is also two other LCD status lights: the “protected” mode which means surge suppressor components are intact and providing surge protection and the 2nd indicating that unit is connected to a grounded wall outlet. The main reason we bought this power bar is for the switch control functions which allows us to turn on and off power to devices without shutting the entire power bar off. The “always on” plug is handy for those devices which you do not want to turn off like a clock radio etc. and you still have the security from power surges. The electric cord is heavy duty but more flexible than we have seen in some other surge suppressor. The entire unit looks well made. One drawback, is that we found the power bar difficult to attach to a wall. The placement holes on the back are not the easiest to align nor allow for a secure attachment. We definitely are finding this power bar to be advantageous for our purposes and would consider another one or two in the near future as long as we don’t require it to attach to a vertical surface. Would give this product a 4 ½ stars out of five because of the poor attachment arrangement but an overall five for usefulness, especially the separate control switches.

Outlet switch broke on first use
Was happy with it for a few days when I was using only two of the outlets so far, but when I tried the first outlet with a florescent lamp plugged in, toggling the associated switch on made a proof sound and smell, and now I can't turn the switch off... The switch just doesn't stay in the off position... Immediately turned everything off with the master switch and unplugged the bar, since I don't think it's safe anymore... The lifetime warranty says I need to send it to their Chicago office and that I'm supposed to pay for shipping... Not sure I'm ready to spend so much on international shipping for a $34CAD product...
