2 Running, Third Died
Built my system in July 2007. Bought 4 and used 3 of these drives (one on the shelf pending inevitable failure) in a RAID-5 configuration giving me about a 1TB fault tolerant data drive. Today - 6 Mos after the warranty expired, ONE of the drives failed. Installed the backup (from the shelf) and the data drive is currently rebuilding itself (fingers crossed). System used about 4-6 Hr per day (sometimes more) over the past 3 years - nothing too extreme. Today purchased a new replacement HD502 (replacement for the HD501 being reviewed), and hope that will last a bit longer. I think the wise thing to do will be to install THAT drive immediately upon arrival - so that I will have TWO new drives installed - hopefully minimizing the chances of another out of warranty failure, AND minimizing the chances of a URE should the final HD501 die, requiring solid performance from the remaining drives for the rebuild..SO - bottom line - after 3-1/2 years, 1 down, 2 running.
