Review: Inexpensive With Plenty of Capability - I am very happy with this after having used it extensively for the last couple of weeks. A perk of my profession is that I get to use really expensive and capable test equipment at work but I wanted some of that capability for my hobby projects. That said I went into this purchase not expecting professional quality gear. My expectation was for hobby equipment and I feel like this product fulfills that expectation quite well. There is plenty out on the web regarding what this does and does not do, so I won't rehash that here. I will say that there are many firmware available for this and some do different things, or do some of the same things differently. In any case, you will likely want to update the firmware on this or try one of the others. It is quite easy to do. This particular unit came in a plastic case with a couple of cables, an SMA F to F barrel, and the terminations for calibration. A USB cable is also included along with a nice stylus, something that is absolutely a must for the operation of the touchscreen. Everything you need to get started is here except documentation. That's reasonable because any documentation will be specific to firmware and firmware changes often. So you'll get that yourself electronically and you'll likely want to watch some videos as well to get up to speed on the operation of it. The included plastic case might be ok for some, but I recommend you put this into some more robust storage when not in use. At this price what you are getting is somewhat delicate and exposed. That's fine for a reasonably clean bench. I've even used it with care in the field. Just know that this isn't something you're going to casually throw in the tool bag, you're going to want to protect this. So far I have enjoyed using this for a number of tasks including: sweep antennas, tune filters, tune antenna traps, measure inductors, measure capacitors, and so much experimentation with tuned circuits. Not only has it increased my productivity on my hobby bench, it's really helped me to learn some concepts and reinforce others. What a pleasure to be able to do that without worry because if I harm this thing in the process that's a whole lot different than playing around with my professional test equipment at work that costs tens of thousands of dollars. In conclusion, this is a nice inexpensive bit of kit that produces reasonable results for the hobbyist. I am quite pleased with it.
Review: A solid way to test the performance of an antenna across a broad range of frequencies - This is my second NaniVNA H4 after my first died a couple years after purchase. I suspect the reason the old one broke was lack of care on my part with static on connecting antennas, since it effectively a radio receiver (with a built-in signal generator) and I'm plugging in random antennas to test. I replaced my broken one with this and it's as good as the previous one. I understand this is one of the "recommended" vendors in that they support they open hardware project so I bought this rather than a cheap copy that doesn't respect the open project. The water resistant hard case is a very nice improvement over my previous model (stored in a cardboard box). The screen size is much better than the cheap 3" previous models, the screen alone is very usable for testing and the whole device works well over USB with at least one Android app. A solid way to test the performance of an antenna across a broad range of frequencies. Very many properties can be tested, even cable length to the point of failure if you have a suspected cable break.

## Features

- NanoVNA-H4 Protective Storage Bag: Designed for NanoVNA-H4, this bag combines protection, portability and organization. Custom EVA hard shell (shockproof, waterproof, dustproof) shields from scratches/damage; soft inner lining keeps the device clean. Lightweight build with a comfortable handle, compact size for easy carrying (lab/workbench/on-the-go) and quick device access. Mesh pockets + foam dividers keep cables, calibration kits & accessories organized, no clutter
- LATEST VERSION V4.4: Developed by Hugen, the AURSINC NanoVNA-H4 comes with the latest V4.4 version—with a 9KHz-1.5GHz measurement range and enhanced dynamics during base wave operation. It features a 4.0-inch LCD touchscreen, and a compact, portable design. Its default firmware prioritizes antenna performance measurement, while the analyzer delivers excellent RF performance for S-parameter testing—perfect for ham radio operators, electrical engineers, and antenna builders needing efficient vector testing tools
- IMPROVED FREQUENCY ALGORITHM: The improved frequency algorithm of Nano VNA H4 can use the odd harmonic extension of si5351 to support the measurement frequency up to 1.5GHz. The 9K-300MHz frequency range of the si5351 direct output provides better than 70dB dynamic. The extended 300M-900MHz band provides better than 60dB of dynamics, and the 900M-1.5GHz band is better than 40dB of dynamics. Used it to check out new cable or antenna installations and to routinely adjust the RF tuner for optimum
- BUILT-IN MICRO-SD PORT & TDR FUNCTION: This antenna analyzer features a brand new panel and a new SD port for data storage, supporting up to 32GB memory cards (not included). Unlike older NanoVNA versions, it lets you customize the date and time for easier data recording. Added TDR functionality—widely used to quickly measure coaxial cable length and locate faults via impedance discontinuity calculations. The default firmware's main function is antenna performance measurement
- PC CONNECTION & ANDROID CONTROL: Using the PC software NanoVNASaver, the Nano VNA H4 antenna analyzer can connect to your device, extract data for display on a computer, and save it to Touchstone files. You can also export Touchstone (snp) files via the software for use in various radio design and simulation tools. With its TX/RX method, the analyzer measures complete S11 and S21 parameters. To obtain S12 and S22 parameters, you only need to manually rewire the transceiver ports
- WHAT'S INCLUDED: 1 x NanoVNA-H4 Host (built-in 1950mAh long-life battery), 1 x 4pcs SMA Male Calibration Kit (open/short/load + SMA female-to-female connector, for precise calibration), 2 x 6.3-inch (16cm) SMA Male-to-Male RG174 RF Cables, 1 x USB Type-C Data Cable, 1 x Type-C to Type-C Cable, 1 x Lanyard (with integrated stylus), 1 x Extra Stylus Pen,1 x User Manual. It's a great antenna analyzer for your ham station—easy setup, no complex calibration

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can this analyzer be use on a ham radio antenna between 80m-10m band?**
A: Absolutely. It is a fantastic unit. I use mine for antennas from 500 khz to 600 mhz. There is a user group. If you search you can find a user manual, and some software for your PC.

**Q: Is some assembly required?**
A: The one I purchased, and where you are presumably asking the question, no. It had an installed battery, only requiring a charge before use (via microUSB connector). It even came with a calibration in the default "C0" location (0.5 to 900 MHz), though you'll want to do your own calibration over frequency ranges of interest later. You could add a case to make it more robust to handling "in the field", but that isn't necessary and few do it. You will likely want some adapters from SMA to BNC, UHF, etc., to connect it to antennas and other devices with those connector types. Charge the battery, download the documentation, maybe buy some RF connector adapters, that is all you need to do to get started.

**Q: Can this vna test 868mhz and 908mhz, 915mhz antenna?**
A: Not sure. The one I purchased goes to 900 MHz. The product listing that I bought from now says it operates up to 1.5 GHz (1500 MHz). This may be a function of firmware version, as the higher frequencies are done with harmonics of the basic oscillator frequency (300 MHz) - which means higher noise and less accuracy - though enough for basic antenna measurements. The newer version may have slightly improved hardware, but my guess is it depends on your firmware version. Updating the firmware is not difficult, you just have to make sure you get the firmware for your version of the device (there are only about 4, with a couple of people writing firmware for some of them, and this is the most common type). Since they now advertise 1.5 GHz, it must come with the later firmware that supports it installed. So, I'd say "Yes", but not from direct experience. Remember to do a calibration in the frequency range of interest to get accurate results.

**Q: Can it be used on 11 m 26 to 27 MHz**
A: Yes, the NanoVNA operates from 0.10 MHZ to 940 MHz, and with reduced precision over a wider range (depending on firmware version). Out of the box, the 27 MHz region is in the heart of its operating range. Be sure to clear the calibration and then calibrate over the frequency range of interest. Although some posts become pretty technical, a wealth of information is available on the groups.io nanovna-users group, easily located with a search. They have links to a Wiki and several manuals written by different people, videos, etc.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A no brainer purchase for anyone installing or building antennas
*by K***H on December 4, 2020*

Antenna theory is complex and I've found that this little thing allows me to get away with just knowing the basics. Let's face it, it's easier to randomly move things around or tweak a design to find the best SWR than it is to understand what to do to get the best SWR. Significantly better for SWR than an SWR meter, because you see the whole curve. If you're tuning to a specific frequency it's not just what the SWR is at that point, it's where it is above and below. Can't imagine doing with out it.
