The basics of growing herbs
This is an excellent introduction to growing and using herbs. There is a basic introduction to the book which includes cultivation recommendations, how to harvest and preserve them, and several recipes for using them. The rest is composed of sections on each of 40 herbs. Each section includes a photo of the plant, a paragraph or two on its cultivation, how to harvest and preserve it and finally notes on its taste profile and cooking tips. The book is short and to the point and serves as an excellent reference for the individual plants.I would also recommend THE COOK'S HERB GARDEN by Jeff Cox and Marie Pierre Mine. They have a bit more material on growing, preserving and cooking with herbs, but slightly less information on each individual plant. I particularly like their suggestions for combining several plants in a container.

Good basic introduction to growing and using 40 culinary herbs
Excellent introduction to growing and using 40 popular culinary herbs, with clear photographs' usually several for each herb. Brief but solid advice about sun/shade, climate, soil requirements, pests, and culinary uses of herbs. Instructions for syrups, vinegars, pastes and butters. Useful Suggested Readings for more information, and a good index in addition to table of contents. This is best used as an introduction to growing herbs and for a quick tour before getting one's hands dirty. Belsinger and Tucker are rock solid as an herbarist and and an academic botanist, very reliable. There's a confusing wealth of publications out there, and many are basically reprints of each other by people of shallow experience. Belsinger and Tucker have decades of experience and lay out the basics. This book will get you started in the right direction for a successful herbal growing experience.
