‘Help others invest prudently. Conservatively, with balance. So they can enjoy life and not worry about money.’
Oklahoma author Randy L. Thurman, with four degrees to his credit including an MBA from Oklahoma State University, has taught investing, personal finance, and economics at the college level as well as researching and applying investment strategies as founder and co-president of Retirement Investment Advisors, Inc. (RIA). He is considered on of the nation’s Best Financial Advisors. Randy frequently contributes articles on financial planning, investing and business ethics to publications such as CPAFocus, Medical Economics Magazine, NW Style Magazine, Slice, Metro Journal, The Oklahoman and has been a guest on Fox News Network's Fox on Money.Randy’s premise is shared in his Introductory comments – ‘Imagine how it would feel if you could sail through your retirement years, confident you’d done all you could do to have a worry-free income for life, regardless of the economic storms ahead. Imagine the peace of mind you’d have as you turn 65, 70, 85, and beyond, if you knew your money was working as hard as you did during your working years, so you’d have an inflation-protected income for as long as you live. If I could show you how to create a portfolio that would turn those imaginings into reality, would you be willing to spend a few hours learning how to do it? I’m betting you would—and it’s my belief that you deserve to stop worrying about your future so you can go out and enjoy your retirement. That’s why I’ve created a step-by-step approach to investing your money when it’s time to retire, so you can create what I call an All-Weather Retirement Portfolio.’In this unique (yes, it is unique in that it is a well researched – and experienced) book Randy strikes the gong on that terrifying aspect of survival after retirement. As he states,’ If you’re already retired, you might feel like investing is one huge gamble. You may feel you should protect your principal no matter what, especially since you don’t really know how many years you’ll need the income it provides. Consequently, you might feel safest investing primarily in certificates of deposit, money markets, or government bonds. These types of investments do offer a guarantee of principal (if you hold on to them until they mature). Unfortunately, the dollars you invest in them don’t hold their purchasing power. And if you live as long as we all hope you’ll live, this is a formula for disaster. In the pages that follow I’ll show you exactly how these investments have fared in the past, when the financial environment was excellent for vehicles like this—and I’ll compare their performance to that of other types of investments available to you.’ His knowledge of the financial aspects of retiring reassure us that his book is wise and well worth heeding. He explains ‘How to invest, no matter what happens in the outside world, to maximize the probability you will have a worry-free income for life. ▪Why investing for income is different from investing to accumulate a retirement fund.’Randy shares his personal history and divides his book of advice into four parts – Preparing to set sail into all kinds of weather, The longitude and latitude of investing after you retire, Designing your all-weather retirement portfolio. and Ready to set sail (with an advisor you can trust, etc).Solid, well written very accessible book, this, and finally a reliable guide to surviving in what we all fear to be the 'winter of our discontent': Randy makes the sailing into good weather of retirement available! Perfect for those within 5 years before or after retirement
So many books are available on how to get ready for retirement, but not so many for when you've actually taken the plunge (or are just about to do so). I've already retired about a year ago, so I found this book helpful on how to plan my portfolio for the best distribution methods and percentages (which he goes over in detail).I also especially liked that this author was not so unrealistic or arrogant to think that his portfolio would be perfect under any retirement situation. Instead, he left the door open for some variation and reminded us that no one has a crystal ball on the market and the economy. But because he has been so thorough in this research, his portfolio recommendations should last 40 years through all of the market ups and downs. He also does a great job in sharing that research, in summary form, with the reader. And unlike so many other books, this one is not just a sales pitch for you to hire him or his firm. In fact, he gives good solid advice on how to find a good personal financial advisor if one is desired. All in all the book is an interesting read and definitely helpful.

Great Book no matter your level of financial sophistication Best financial planning book I have read
CPA here, this is the best financial planning asset allocation book I have ever read. I have read it 3 times since getting it two weeks ago. I have already started to implement the insightful and carefully thought-out strategies (which use data to backup the strategy). This book is going to be given out by me as a gift for friends and family. This book is well written and easy to follow no matter what your level of financial sophistication. If you are serious about handling your own asset allocation planning, or want to understand the strategy of your own financial advisor, get this book. After reading this book I want to go for my Personal Financial Specialist license like Randy. He is a CFP, CPA/PRS. While this book is near perfect, at least to me, I hope there is a follow-up book because there are a few other areas/data points off the top of my head I would like to hear Randy’s thoughts on how 2022/2023 effects the data of both equity and bonds, more about cash as part of the asset allocation (70/30/#?), more data on large cap growth vs value with dividends considered, same for small cap growth vs value, how a mid cap allocation would impact “The All-Weather Retirement Portfolio”)

Solid advice for well read and active investors
As a retired commercial banker, appreciate the knowledge base and approach to retirement portfolio income building the author provided. His comments on finding an advisor are on target and should be used as most people do not know how little is known about this subject.

Excellent Book
Very informative but not overly technical. Lays out a very good game plan for preserving capital.

Only average needs info which qualified or non accounts to place assets
Only average needs info which qualified or non accounts to place assets. This seems like key information needed. The worst of this is not explaining which assets to tap to live on. How to draw the funds out and from qualified or non and which assets. Finally the tax considerations are missing and an essential factor.

... not your typical get cozy on the couch and enjoy a good story type book
Although this book is definitely not your typical get cozy on the couch and enjoy a good story type book, it is a good change of pace in terms of what I am usually used to reading. It was interesting and practical for me as a young professional to read this book for insight, value, and perspective regarding post-retirement; however, I often felt that because I am young, it was not something I was too concerned about paying a lot of attention to. I do know that it is an important topic, so I still enjoyed reading what the author, Randy Thurman, had to say. His writing clearly demonstrated his knowledge of how to plan for retirement finances. He is either clearly experienced and knowledgeable of the subject or he has done extensive research on the topic. Either way, the book is clear and simple to follow and understand. Overall, I would recommend this book for any person of any age who is looking to gain a little insight on post-retirement finances.
