The Folk Tale Classics Keepsake Collection

These books bring back memories of when I read them to my kids and now I’m reading them to my grandkids. Beautifully illustrated but the pages rip easily.

GREAT set for children. The pictures are great, and the text is captivating. The value of getting the set vs. the individual books is a huge plus!

This is a great set of children stories. Galdone tells these fairy tales in classic form, meaning they are not Disney-downed to the point where they all have happy endings. In other words, in The Three Bears, Goldilocks runs off and is never heard from again. Now I love these classical retellings for my children. For starters, they're truer to the original stories. Secondly, they teach children that there are consequences to our actions (e.g. in the Little Red Hen, if you don't work, you don't eat). Third, my children love the stories the way they're told here. However, if you're looking for happy endings and Disney sunsets, these might not be the stories you're looking for. None of this is to say these stories are not appropriate for little children. They are all wonderfully illustrated and beautifully told and I read them to even my youngest child (who is 2) without reservation. Two more notes: 1) In the set we got, the books are hard covers, not paper backs as the description on this page gives; 2) The four books come packed extremely tightly in a cardboard box which is probably my only minor complaint. The books are packed so tightly in the box it is difficult for my kids to retrieve the individual books. They usually just bring me the box and I have to finagle the desired book out.

These books are smaller than the original classic Galdone editions, but some of the original format books appear to be out of print in hardcover, and buying them in this boxed set is much less expensive. I thought the publisher did a good job of adapting the books to a smaller format. The boxed set is a good way to introduce preschoolers-to first graders to the most well-known folk tales.

The language used in the town mouse and country mouse book could've been a LOT simpler. Its way way advanced for toddlers or even 5yr olds to understand.

My 3 yr old is obsessed. We read these books together every night! (And sometimes in the mornings 🙃 )

Paul Galdone's delightful illustrations make these children's classic tales the perfect gift. I purchase seven or eight of these handsome hardcover children's classics and give them as a "library set" for newborns. The parents have been quite pleased with the gift. Incidentally, Amazon offers a great selection of them, so it is very easy to purchase them all in one place.
