CRKT Tao Pen Tactical Pen Black TPENAK

I have had many of these exact pens over the years. I carry them everyday, all the time, which has caused me to lose a few. The writing mechanism is fantastic and writes on anything. However I have lost faith in this design recently. The screw threads started to fail, causing the pen to come apart in my pocket. I put it back together a couple of times before it stopped having the ability to reassemble. It will now not go back together securely. You can get it to thread slightly but with just a bump, it springs apart. The threads don't seem to be deep enough or long enough to grab. I thought maybe I had a bad one. After all, I have had several without failure. I ordered another and what do you know? It arrived from Amazon with the same exact problem. This "new" one out of the box would not thread without coming apart easily. In fact, it arrived with the cap off, leading me to believe that someone returned it due to this problem. This is unacceptable for a "tactical" pen. I sent it back to Amazon and contacted CRKT. They said to send them back and they would replace it. I will do that with the remaining one I have, however that requires me paying for postage and waiting for it to return, which by the way, they were out of stock at the moment. Because I no longer trust it with daily duty, I have moved on to a different brand that appears to have better engineering and a more solid reputation, also at a lower price. It is a shame, because I was a big fan of this one until it appears they had a bad run or I never kept one long enough to have recognized this eventual flaw.

Even though I'm new to tactical style pens, I will give you my review of this CRKT Tao pen..It's a pretty decent pen.. very rigid, and could quite possibly be used for self defense.. It takes about 6 spins to remove the cap. There is an o-ring that the cap presses against when you put the cap on. It isn't present though when you put the cap on the rear-side of the pen.I am a little surprised though at the clip. I pulled it out about an 1/8th of an inch to feel the tension and the bugger is now sprung a little.. I'm glad I didn't bend it further or this sucker would go back to Amazon..Another thing I am surprised with is the tip of the refill barely protrudes through it's opening. I clipped a very small piece of plastic and inserted it below the refill to push it out a tiny bit and that seems to work but wouldn't you think the pen would be made to fit its refills?Anyway, I've only carried it for a few days and the finish has not one mark on it yet.

I have bought two of these. They write well and are very well built. They are a little inconvenient to use as a pen because of the number of threads holding the cap on. It takes 2 1/2 turns to remove it. Hardly the end of the world, but it does get a bit tedious.I would give it five stars except that I had to do some minor finishing work on both of these. The pocket clips on both had sharp burrs on the inside surface causing them to hang up on my pockets instead of being able to withdraw them smoothly. This was easily fixed in just a few minutes by removing the clips with a T7 driver and lightly filing the clip end then following up with a few strokes with emery cloth.

This is a nice pen. It is awesome that is can be used as a tactical weapon. However, I didn't receive the pen they have pictured. I got the matte black one. Then I messaged them they said they would fix it and sent me a matte black one. So yep I have the matte black version. The pen itself writes great but it is top heavy when the cap is screwed on the back.

The pen writes very well (Fisher Space Pen ink), but the two main issues I have with the pen are:-The outer black paint rubs off very quickly. I carry this pen in my front pants pocket (I wear cargo pants made of a poly twill blend) and within a month's time there's wear marks on the cap threading and along one side of the body of the pen. I would think the pen should be made of stronger stuff than this. Disappointing.

Solid piece of work and reasonable price. As mentioned by another reviewer, the heads of screws for the pocket clip do not line up perfectly with the holes in the clip. As long as they do not come loose then no matter.

Good sturdy tactical pen. Mine writes well and the finish has stood up well to being in a pocket with other tools and a flashlight. The cap takes a lot of twists to take off but I still carry and use mine when I work.

Having to unscrew the cap takes time, but this is a pretty subtle pen. An additional bonus is that, where I live, accidental pen thieving happens frequently, and this pen is heavy enough to make people notice that it's not their pen.

This tactical pen is one of the best you can get on the market.This pen will give you 3 option of defense. And every one of this 3 options are VERY effective.And the look of the pen him self is not so TACTICAL so, it is a good think, from a tactical point of vue.But the major reason why I like this tactical pen is the grip, that pen is very grippy and is a devastating impact weapon.I receive the pen in 3 days (Free shiping) in a perfect condition at the lower price I've seen online and of corse in store.Im totaly satisfy about the pen him self and also the service *****.

Excellent pen even though it was left on my door step in below freezing weather for a significant amount of time as the delivery company never knocked or ran the doorbell. Once it warmed up it wrote beautifully.

I keep it on me all the time. Very sturdy and writing is very smooth.
