Get the real thing
The genuine Roadster is far better than the cheap generic substitutes. It is sticky on the bottom and will adhere to any dashboard I can think of. It allows vertical and horizontal use of the phone. For horizontal use, the top side has notched edges and the bottom has smooth edges where the phone sits. So make sure it's not upside down (not hard, considering the logo.)The biggest problem you may encounter, which is not a fault of the item, is finding a good position for it. On a related note, it fits my phone just fine horizontally as long as I take it out of its case. It might work with a phone with a thinner case, but with a thicker gel case it doesn't quite fit. And if I force it in, it will be angled downward. The latter part is a design compromise that makes it well suited in some cases, but not ideal for everybody. The flat part should hold a phone just fine, but some newer and larger phones might not fit lying down. An iPhone should fit just fine, and anything around that size or smaller would fit. So will some a bit bigger. It measures 7.5 by 12.5 (approx 3 inch by 4 7/8 inches) so if you have a larger phone, especially in a case, you should measure it first or look up its dimensions. In addition to the center grooves, there is an off center indent on the top, presumably to leave room for a charger cable. It's a strange position for it, and ultimately unnecessary for many phones since the cable can fit above the lip without a problem. Also on some phones, the power connector is on the bottom so if you did need that groove it would be moot unless you put this upside down. One thing you need to be careful of is which seller you buy it from. I bought my first one from a seller called New Topic and they sold me a fake generic one. So check seller feedback. The real one comes in a package that says Roadster and the emblem is on the item itself. I ordered a replacement from RandomBy and it was about the same price but fulfilled by Amazon. It's genuine. This is not meant to be a seller review but I would bet that a lot of the negative reviews come from people who were sold a fake product by a dishonest seller. The number of sellers changes on any given day, and the one I got the real one from wasn't even listed when I got the first one. So don't assume from reviews that you will get a bad one that will melt on your dash. I've seen the fake ones and I wouldn't trust them not to do that. But Amazon requires sellers to send the exact item listed and pictured.

Ideal Dash Mount
I tried all sorts of mounts that you stuck to your windshield. My biggest problem was if I was using my phone as a GPS then I got a call or wanted to change the music, I had to unclip it from the mount and then clip it back in. Well needless to say that is not very easy doing while driving. Another problem is no matter what window mount I've had, they have always fallen off at some point during my trip. Most of the time its a crash as it falls and then bounces off into the passenger floor where I can't reach. Finally I saw this mount, the idea seemed perfect and the price was right. I got it and am very satisfied. The stand sticks extremely well but hasn't left anything behind. It also doesn't look like crap when it is sitting there by itself without the phone. I put my phone in it and drive around corners going fast and starting and stopping and it doesn't move at all. i can grab it change something and lay it back in the slot with ease. Here are a couple of negatives. The slot is designed for a caseless iPhone like most the reviews say, so like everyone else I cut enough extra off to fit my case and it works great. Just be careful, I cut a little too deep on one side and slit the edge, but I don't notice it. The thing does have an odd smell about it at first. I smelled it when I opened it and then the first bit while it was in my car, but it will wear off.Overall it's a great product and if you want your phone on the dash, this is the perfect product to do it.Update 7/10/12: I switched to a galaxy nexus and the mount still works great, although a bit more loose (I wish I had not made those cuts now haha). Under certain light conditions it is hard to see the phone. I found to fix this tilt the phone forward instead of backward, causing the phone to cast its own shadow on the screen and make it more visible. It still sticks well, if yours isn't or it got dirty just wipe it down with a damp rag and wipe your dash and it will work great again. The weird smell is also gone. This has proven to still be a good purchase and suits my needs perfectly.
