Maps are now smaller, book already outdated 4.5 months after publication
I was mostly in Cabarete only, so I shall make only 2 comments:(1) MAPS ARE NOW SMALLER AND LESS DETAILED? Seems to be so in the latest makeover of LP books. Bad idea!(2) ALREADY OUTDATED. I used this in early March 2012, book publication date is stated as Nov 1, 2011. Yet at least two of the recommended eating places in Cabarete was already closed down, and the recommendations were generally off the mark. The new Belgian bakery next to Banco Popular (west of the town centre) is clearly superior to Dick's, yet receives no mention.Prices for bus fares and stuff were also already outdated. Most likely the research was done in say 2010 or 2009, and by the time the book came off the press in late 2011, the information was already outdated.I've come to expect better from LP, so this was below par. 3 stars.

Excellent, but would like more of Haiti
I found this guide to be excellent. I purchased it specifically because it had a section on Haiti, although it is small compared to the Dominican section. All the places we visited in the Dominican Republic that were recommended in this guide were exactly as described-all great places. I would like to see more affordable hotels, particularly in Santo Domingo though. I felt the guide gave a good representation of the culture and history of the two countries, and I particulalry liked the updated Haiti section reflecting the earthquake. I felt the section on Haiti was lacking, in general though, but that may not be the author's fault as things in Haiti are very unreliable. Given the number of foreign aid workers in Haiti, it would be nice to have more information available, however. The prices in Haiti were significantly higher than in the guide book.

Great book with great advice
Great book with great advice. We used this and a book by Katherine Tuider to guide our travels through the Dominican. We used both because at any given time both had current and outdated information (such is the Dominican). Overall the maps were a problem since the DR is rapidly developing its roadway systems. At any point at least one to all 4 maps we were using (two from the DR) were completely useless and outdated.Overall this book had great information, great recommendations on travel places and decent maps.

basic stuff
I picked this up for a trip to Punta Cana. so i haven't read the whole book, but the PUnta Cana section is pretty thin. This very popular tourist destination is covered in about eight pages and wasn't very detailed. So while I looked at the other books on the DR and this was the most recently updated one.All I can say is that if you want to know a lot about Punta Cana this book won't help. What is there is good and it did seem to be the best guide out there, but that's not saying much.

OK but...
Very helpful guide, but it misses some of the cheap spots. Nevertheless, I have it and lend it to friends coming to D.R. They can find useful info and history notes there. Then, they can build it from there.

Probably did they best they could
I found the book to have limited information. Overall I really like Lonely Planet books and own at least a dozen. This one would rank at the bottom of the list for me. But, there aren't many guidebooks out there about the DR or Haiti; so I think Lonely Planet did the best they could do.

Love Lonely Planet
This book has so much information and nails it down by city or region. There are prices galore and I've been able to better plan my 17 day solo back packing trip as a result. Not that I have a minute to minute itinerary but I've now decided I need to go to Las Terrenas (which I never heard of before despite a few prior trips).

Good
Since Lonely planet is releasing soon its new version (November 2014), I couldn't find it in stores anymore. I was convenient, cheap and quick. Thanks

Haiti, a great place for adventure (it's actually really safe) and this is a good tour guide to have with you, don't go without!
One of the few guides available for Haiti and it got us around the island pretty well. It suggests 2 main tours, south and north. we went for the north tour and it was a great adventure. Out of our entire Caribbean tour (Florida, jamaica, haiti, bahamas) Haiti was the best place to go, one of the few places left in the world where you can still feel like a traveler and not a tourist. especially in contrast to jamaica and the bahamas. I very much recommend going to Haiti and using this guide! All the restaurants and sights were as described despite the slightly unstable nature of the country. We never made it to DR unfortunately as we only had about 10 days and taking the bus to DR would have bean a day in each direction. and there are no flights between the 2 countries really. A friend of ours took the bus and it was fine. Just depends on how much time you got:) Enjoy Haiti!

Informative travel guide
Bought this to help plan a trip to Dominican Republic and Haiti - it's one of the few guides which covers both, but there is less info on Haiti. Seems very clearly laid out, though I haven't travelled yet.

Good old Lonely Planet!
Gives a great introduction to the DR and Haiti. Definitely provides a flavour if what's to come in a few weeks time!

Fairly useful fir an inclusive holiday
it was useful, but I felt it could have more small maps of the main holiday areas, in particular Punta Cana. There was great emphasis on the independent traveller, but it would have been nice to have more advice for presumably the majority of people who visit and enjoy an inclusive resort., eg, what simple and cheap things you can find to do just outside the resorts,

OK
