Good looking, but inspect carefully - movement quality issues
I went through three of these units. The first unit had a hard defect - seconds hand movement was uneven, it would slow down and then speed up. The movement had faulty components, suggesting flaws in quality control. Additionally, under certain angle of light I could see some dust/dirt on the inner side of the crystal (small enough not to be noticed by most). The second unit was running 30 sec/day slow. I could see through the back that the speed regulator was turned all the way to the minus side, again suggesting flaws in manufacturing process. I could have taken it to a watchmaker for regulation, but I decided to try my luck again and ordered a third unit. Third time was the charm. This unit didn't have any visible flaws, seconds hand movement was nice - as smooth as 21,600 vibrations per hour movement can be. And the stars must have aligned the right way when this particular unit exited the manufacturing line - the watch is running +1.5 seconds per 24 hours. This was my first measurement, which started on the second day of wearing the watch. During this time the watch spent 18 hours on the wrist and 6 hours sitting in a watch box, still, face up. We'll see what happens next, but the important thing is that this watch, if you are lucky to have a well working unit, is capable of top notch accuracy. And now, pros and cons:Pros- Genuinely beautiful piece, with superb color combination and depth, excellent detail and good size and weight. Looks more refined than similar looking Seiko and Orient models.- Bracelet has four (not two, like most) fine adjustment holes, guaranteeing perfect sizing ability- Potential for extreme accuracy (like any automatic, regulation may be required to achieve it)- Expected features, such as ability to wind by hand, and movement halt (seconds hand including) when adjusting the time, are all there.Cons- Based on two flawed units in a row, quality control is less than adequate. Or perhaps Amazon got a bad batch. Inspect your unit carefully.- The magnifying glass over the date is a weak point in the design. It doesn't add any real benefit, but breaks the smooth flow of the crystal. It's only a minor flaw though.Watchmakers and pundits will tell you the movement in this watch is Asian, not Swiss. My watchmaker upon viewing the movement from the back side said it was Chinese movement that they copied from Seiko. Stuhrling has been under continuous scrutiny for misrepresenting what they sell. They try very hard to disguise the movement by assigning their own name (ST-9088 in this case), but they don't make their own movements. It's likely that the "Swissness" of Stuhrling Prestige watches is stretched despite of Stuhrling's strong claim that it is Swiss made. But that doesn't mean the movement is bad, in fact everything so far suggests that it is a good quality movement, especially for the price.02/20/13 UpdateDowngrading to three stars - the watch started to malfunction after just under a month, and I sent it back for a refund. It was working very well (or so I thought) until one morning I found it completely stopped in my (working) watch winder (it was on my wrist on the previous day). It took 20+ crown turns to get it going again, it felt like something was in the way. Then as I pushed the crown in to set the time, I saw the second hand jump four seconds ahead. I repeated this several times (pulling the crown out to halt the movement and pushing it in) and found that it was doing it every third time. At some point the movement got stuck again as I pushed the crown in, and wouldn't move until I gave it another 20 or so hand winds. Conclusion: faulty movement. I am giving up on this watch and on Stuhrling in general. Got myself an Orient Blue Malko as a replacement (review to come) and won't miss it.
