Great for drawing horses
My ultimate goal is to paint horses in oil but I first need to learn to draw them. This was exactly what I was looking for. Having no experience in using pencil, I found this to be a great reference on how to do eyes, legs, and other "parts" of the horse. I have other books that help with the painting part, but this was very helpful with drawing, especially if you want to learn the parts of the horse before moving on to painting.

Lots missing from this book
I think this would be a great book for a child or someone who wants to draw horses but does not know much about drawing in general. There are step by step instructions for drawing standing, untacked horses in pencil. The major strength of the book is that it shows how to use soft pencil and blending tortillions to create realistic shading effects. Major deficits include no information whatsoever on gaits and other types of movement, almost no anatomical information, very little on breed differences, and nothing on tack. The dozen equine pages in Jack Hamm's How to Draw Animals does a much better job with these essential topics. The author recommends that the student draw from photos - I didn't need a book to tell me that. If your photo doesn't depict your subject in the position you want, this book won't be much help. Also, if your favorite medium is anything other than pencil, this book is not for you. Having said all this, the pictures I drew from the instructions were definitely better than anything I had drawn previously. So I don't regret buying it, but I wish it had been more comprehensive.

Great starter book!
The book is a great starter book on how to draw horses and she shows you how to draw horses by showing the different areas of the horse to draw such as the eyes, nose, ears, and hooves. I highly recommend Lee Hammond books.

Great for beginners!
Great book with basics on drawing horses. I thought I would do a refresher course for myself before teaching my son about the dimensions of a horse. This book does a great job breaking down the parts and the illustrations are well done.

More for beginners
The book itself is meant more for beginners- She offers good advice on shading and lighting, but the overall anatomy of the horse is really lacking. This book is more of a supplement then anything. The only advice for horse anatomy is looking at pictures and trying to copy them. While this is very handy for people trying to familiarize themselves with horses, it doesn't lead to learn how to draw them in dynamic posing. I would recommend "The Art of Animal Drawing" by Ken Hultgren for an excellent study of horses.

My favorite drawing book!
This book is wonderful. Lee Hammond is an excellent teacher. She is encouraging and makes it easier. Her technique for drawing realistic art is simple and truly beautiful. I am now looking forward to adding some of her other books to my collection: Drawing realistic pets from photographs and Drawing Birds. If you lack confidence or patience, try this book. Now I draw almost every day with pleasure instead of fear. Draw Horses is my favorite drawing book and I love to go back at it for the inspiration!
