It uses a variation on recorder fingering, so Key of C notes are the same as on a regular sax, but some different fingerings are needed for some of the sharps and flats. Maybe about 85%-90% the same as a regular sax. **Q: How often does the reed have to be replaced?** A: I play soprano sax. It depends on how often you play. The mouth piece and read should be cleaned after each playing session. When you’re notes are not coming out as clear, that would be a good time to replace your read. Make sure you moisten tour read. Simple but sounds good ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good for beginners *by J***A on January 23, 2026* Good beginner sax!! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great with minor modifications *by C***B on November 25, 2025* I bought this for my son’s 4th birthday. I play clarinet and had already gotten him the DooD that he’s been really great with. When I came home with a sax he wanted one too. I was really surprised at the resistance of playing these instruments. I play “real” ones and was “struggling” a bit, especially with this jsax. The notes would squeak if they came out at all. I ended up switching the reed it came with for the one that came with the DooD (they’re the same) and it was a noticeable improvement but still not “right”, especially with the lower notes. Out of annoyance I threw one of my wooden clarinet reeds in it and was delighted that it fit. It was also so. much. easier to play - with my 3.5 reed! I ordered a few 2.0 clarinet reeds for my son to use, and I recommend that right off the bat when you purchase this. The clarinet reed is longer and thicker so it is harder to get out, and should not be left in the instrument. I’d recommend that anyway, as well as a thorough swabbing after each use. I don’t care what the manufacturer says about that. Spit gets in there, clean it! So far as sound goes, definitely more recorder like than sax like, but it’s a great introduction for small children.
