Does the bottom tray catch the water or does it drain into the sink?

Hi, ELS,It does a little bit of both. I have had this for a few months now and am really pleased with the design and material. The metal feet in the rear of the tray do a good job of giving the rack a nice angle for draining. The spout is not tremendously big, but it does a good job of draining the water. However, as with all dish racks, not every drop of water will always drain into the sink. The instructions for the rack suggest cleaning the tray once a month to ensure a long life for the product. All in all, this is convenient, effective, and well worth the money in my opinion. Best of luck.

What are the dimensions, looking at the metal feet only? (I'm trying to see if this will stand securely in a particular, small space.)

Measuring the metal base/feet is 17"X11". 18"x16" is the whole thing opened.

Do the utensil holders have drainage holes?

Yes, there are plenty of drainage holes in the utensil holders. Each holder has 3 separate compartments with holes on the bottom.

What is the distance between two vertical spikes on the same side? Need to know if removable plates for my waffle iron will fit between two spikes.

I can't tell you that exactly because it's packed away with travel gear, and I don't know what you mean about "spikes". But, if you look at where the plates are, I can tell you that we use this where the plates provided by the B&B where we stay are very large--large than in diagram--and fit in well.
