Good but not the best
Something about this shampoo just didn't sit right with me. The smell of it was overwhelming even after using conditioner- worse than other coal tar shampoos I've used. It was also very watery and unless I poured it straight onto my head it would just spill or drain through my closed fingers

Works great on dry scalp
Rotate in every other day for shampoo

Works fine, but it's hard to justify the price
The bottle I received had an expiration date that had passed awhile ago, but it's not like coal tar goes bad quickly. I had to shake the heck out of the bottle, but it seems fine. The price of this stuff is inexcusable, of course, but it does work reasonably well. Sometimes my scalp just gets extremely itchy, and I need my coal tar extract fix. This extract used to be a common ingredient in "dandruff shampoos," and I've missed seeing tar-based shampoos in stores. This shampoo will NOT leave your hair soft and smooth. It's rough stuff. This is my general routine for using it:1) Wet hair and apply coal tar shampoo generously, massaging it into the scalp.2) Once the scalp is thoroughly covered with the shampoo, sit down and consider the meaning of life for about five minutes. If long hair full of shampoo is a problem, cover it with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.3) Rinse thoroughly, first in warm water and then as cool as you can stand it. Don't reapply the coal tar shampoo. It's done its job and will just dry your hair out more.4) Apply a really good conditioner, like Matrix Sleek, to the middle/ends of hair.5) Rinse again with warm and then cool water. (Just the cool water will soothe an itchy scalp.)There's one alternative I've tried successfully but is a bit messier: Heat a few tablespoons of olive oil (you can mix in a little peppermint, rosemary, and/or tea tree essential oil) and apply it to the scalp. Cover your head with aluminum foil and then with a warm, damp towel. Keep the towel warm (nuke it or whatever) for about 15 minutes. Then use a mild shampoo and optional conditioner, finishing with cool water.

It works, works, works
I waited a while to recommend this product, but since I am just about to place my second order (the larger bottle this time) I thought it was time. This shampoo absolutely works for me and has relieved my symptoms like nothing else. I suffer from seborrhea dermatitis, horrible wake-up-at-night itching, dandruff, sores and so on. Like most other reviewers I had tried just everything both natural and pharmaceutical. Desperate, I read on Dr. Andrew Weil's website that Tar shampoo can sometimes work, as long as the shampoo has the highest concentration of tar. The DHS fit the bill. Could not believe how it worked for me. Within one week, my symptoms were abating, within one month totally minimized. Itching, dandruff gone. If the 'hot spots' act up - if I have gone to the hairdresser, or tried to use any other shampoo or heaters are on in winter - within a few washes of DHS I am back to normal. I wash my hair every other day, and use as directed except I do not repeat the application anymore. I lather and leave it on for the full 6 minutes. I also do intersperse with the SAL shampoo as another reviewer suggested. My hair is long, and I do not put any of the shampoo on it and lather it up per say, once you work it into your scalp and leave on for 6 minutes your hair is clean. The night before I wash my hair I may dot my scalp with some tea tree oil, and try to put some kind of oil treatment on my hair just to keep it hydrated. I haven't found the shampoo to be super drying but do use a really good conditioner. Also, imo the smell does go away. I hope this review helps and you can find relief!

Not sure if it’s a coincidence...
My fiancé has been using this shampoo for several weeks now. We aren’t sure if it’s just a coincidence, but he started using it as the weather changed from summer to fall/winter. It seemed to help right away with the intense itching he experiences, and thus far he has had no more itchy scalp. Though he still has some flaking, it’s much less than it was before. He’s always had the itching and flaking, but this summer was in his words, “the worst it’s even been,” with many many days of burning scalp. Since he has been using the shampoo, he no longer had the itching or burning. May be the shampoo. May be the change in weather/reduced sweating (he works outside). Either way, we are happy to have a much better feeling scalp and can only give the shampoo props for now.

Does the job!
I have scalp psoriasis that flares from time to time. DHS smells terrible as all tar shampoos do but it lathers and if you shampoo with your regular shampoo afterwards your hair will still be nice. I use it a couple times a week. Really helps with itching. Good product and hard to find in stores

Dandruff Gone Quickly
After wearing a black sweater, I discovered white flakes on my shoulders. I couldn't believe it-- hadn't had dandruff or dry scalp in probably 30 years! My family and I have been following skincare regimens from Dr. Sandy Skotnicki's book, "Beyond Soap." One of the products the author recommends for shampoo (specifically dandruff sufferers) is this.I saw improvements after only 2 uses. After a week, my dandruff was gone. I now use this product just once a week and dandruff has stayed away.I have very short hair and this small size should last me a long time. Yes, it stinks like tar when using. Once your hair dries, the smell disappears.
