Constructed of rugged .50-mm, polyester-backed pvc (polyvinyl chloride) fabric, the carhartt surrey coat stands up to driving rains and strong winds. Waterproof and wind resistant, it’s built carhartt tough; the seams are electronically welded and the major seams are also sewn for extra strength. For added protection, the coat’s engineered with a double-front storm placket with inside and outside protective flaps, and neoprene inner-sleeve cuffs with adjustable hook-and-loop closures. The left-chest pocket and two lower-front pockets also protect items from wetness; all feature hook-and-loop closures. When weather threatens, pull up the snap on/off detachable hood. Elbows are also reinforced for strength.

Tired Of Getting Wet, Part II
My wife and I have to feed and water the critters everyday, rain or shine. She'd been using my genuine issue USGI Gore-Tex jacket and overalls for rain gear, and I'd been using after market Tru-Spec Made-In-China knock-off Gore-Tex jacket and overalls.Couple of times the USGI Gore-Tex soaked through and I figured that it was because it was twenty-plus years old; the after market Tru-Spec did okay, but I'd still get damp-ish. My wife had enough last time she got soaked and ordered the Carhartt heavy duty rain jacket and overalls; I figured I'd suck it up and press on with the after market Tru-Spec Made-In-China knock-off Gore-Tex.Well folks, today it came down a frog-choker; even our geese and ducks were under cover in the poultry barns and the rain shelters for the hay - no foolin'. I got soaked and wet and miserable in my knock-off Gore-Tex; my wife remained warm and dry and comfy in her Carhartts.No-brainer time; you don't have to get the boy soaking wet more than two or three times before the lesson finally gets learned. I ordered the Carhartt heavy duty rainwear for me. Will update for fit and functionality soonest, but based on my wife's experience have no doubt that I'll be well-served (and dry).Update 26 FEB 15: Arrived yesterday. I'm 6'3", 260 lbs and the XXL fit comfortably over Dickies denim overalls with a sweatshirt and fleece vest - plenty of room to move in my winter gear. The sleeve length is just right and extends far enough past the knit cuff to overlap heavy duty rubber gloves. Be advised, this is old school heavy-duty rain gear - it doesn't 'breathe' (but have discovered that 'breathe' means "can charge outrageous sums of money for some wowsie-wow high-tech sounding fabric that doesn't keep water out worth a flip"). So, combined with the overalls, as long as I don't go head first into the stock tank this rain gear should keep me nice and dry.Update 27 FEB 15: Been snowing all day; got four inches on the ground so far, which is somewhat unusual for here in Mount Goatmore, Texas. Heavy duty rain jacket and overalls kept us nice and dry and toasty warm even when ice formed on them from the spray and blow-back of filling the drinkers and waterers this morning. Only drawback, this rain gear does get stiff in the cold - after an hour or so wife and I both moving around like Robbie the Robot, but we were still nice and warm and dry. Finished up, knocked the ice off, brought 'em in, hung 'em up in the shower to thaw and dry off. These are good, and worth every penny.

Very sturdy, keeps you dry as a bone.
Was looking around for a coat to get me through the wet early spring months and this is definitely it. Other reviewers have mentioned that it's sized slightly large and I would agree. I am a muscular 220 pounds at 5'9" and a medium fits me perfectly, where I normally would wear a large. Being mostly PVC (80%, 20% nylon) it stops it stops rain dead in it's tracks. There are a lot of other raincoats made for hiking, etc that are made out of ripstop nylon, which admittedly, breathes a little better than PVC. They're okay, but every one I've ever worn lets the rain through if one is out for more than 15 minutes, sometimes sooner if it's a really soaking rain. Not so with this model. You can be out all day and everything under the coat stays dry as a bone. It's a nice bright yellow, which I feel is the "right" color for a raincoat, and the corduroy linings on the collar and sleeve holes keep rain from seeping through the areas where it meets your body--nice. Only drawback is that, as I mentioned earlier, it doesn't breathe as well as nylon, so if you're doing something moderately athletic, you might work up a sweat. But, if you just wear it to take the dog for a walk or wear it while running errands on a rainy day, nothing works better. Very sturdy too--have no doubt it will last several years rip free.

... green for my girlfriend who wanted a Surrey raincoat like mine. Bought her the matching bibs also
Purchased a size small in green for my girlfriend who wanted a Surrey raincoat like mine. Bought her the matching bibs also. Now we both can enjoy a rainy day wearing our Carhartt PVC rainwear. Would highly recommend this jacket for females also. Just order one size down for sure. These are roomy rain slickers which is fine. Love the large underarm gussets that prevent the jacket from riding up when you lift your arms up. Also the internal adjustable neoprene cuffs. External pockets are excellent. You won't find those on most heavy duty slickers as this. Great to be worn in cooler temperatures over a fleece or sweatshirt. This is a serious rain slicker that can be worn for casual use also. Looks good and my girlfriend has gotten compliments on wearing it. Me too, with both of us wearing matching slickers. Heavy duty, serious rain slicker.

great quality but runs large
I got this for my dad in a size small thinking it would be okay, knowing from reviews it was cut a bit big to fit over a heavy jacket for colder weather. It was still way too big on him. In jackets he would wear a 38 regular. I wasn't sure about returns and will pass it along to my brother who normally wears a medium. It fit him better - over a heavy jacket it was just right on him. Unfortunately there are no extra smalls in this item and I will have to explore other brands that are cut smaller for a work wear rain jacket. That said, as with the majority of Carhartt products, this one is great quality, heavy weight. rugged material meant for work wear.

Runs large
The product is extremely well made and worth the money but it runs large. If you have to make a decision, order the smaller size. Even with a sweatshirt or jacket under, it will be very roomy/baggy. My son is 5'9" 165#s. We ordered him the Large for Christmas so he'd have room for a sweater & jacket under, but exchanged it for a Medium after he tried it on. Probably could have gotten him a small.

Great rain jacket!!
I absolutely love this rain jacket! Everything I've ever bought with the Carhartt name on it has been very good quality, this rain jacket is certainly no exception. It's very well made and very rugged. I am 5' 9" and weigh 210 lbs., my chest and waist are both 46", I ordered a Large and consider it a very good fit, it's not too big, but there's enough extra room to wear a hoodie or sweater underneath it in the colder weather. Right now it's summer and I've been wearing it over just a T-shirt and it fits very well, I don't consider it too big. If you live in a warmer climate and will just be wearing it over something light like a t-shirt etc., a Medium would probably work fine too, but personally I like the slightly larger size to allow me the option of wearing something warm underneath the jacket. Hope this helps.

heavy jacket. well constructed
this is a heavy duty jacket. maybe best suited to a fishing boat. i work in construction and find it a little heavy, but would buy again. biggest plus for me is that i can wear it over a t-shirt and it is still pretty comfortable with no itchy seams like HH jackets. fits pretty large.

Great for the price
It’s a great coat for the money.I’m 5’ 10” 200 lbs lifters build. The large fits and I can layer under it. Sleeve and body length is good. A little big around the belly.
