This documentary is good for any music fan to have. I was just disappointed that it didn't take us all the way to T. Pendergrass' passing since it was made after his death. I am glad it was made though

I'm a kid of the 70's - 80's. In the 90's, as a woman, I had a great appreciation for Teddy Pendergrass. I heard his songs as a kid, but as a woman, it was a whole other level. Well after raising kids and moving on with the rigors of life, I forgot about Teddy. I watched his documentary today.Oh my goodness, just a whole new level of appreciation for the man, his voice, and his story. Oh, and his wonderful Mom, wife, and kids. It was the sweetest thing I saw. Teddy was fine, ya'll. I see why the ladies loved him and he loved the ladies.I just remembered watching and thinking of Eddie Murphy's bit on Teddy P. and just chuckled. (Look it up so you can laugh, too. LOL)I am about to go into my iTunes and listen to some Teddy. :)

This is an honest portrayal of the personal life of Teddy Pendergrass, set against the backdrop of his musical talent. The two conflate following his accident that leaves him paralysed and contemplating suicide. His renaissance resulting in him taking to the stage again during Live Aid and for several years thereafter, is testament to his force of character that see him almost retrain as a singer. As with many artists of his calibre, there are the less attractive elements: the drug taking and association with what is termed the Black Mafia and the womanising: the latter probably inevitable given the hypersexualisation that reinforces his vocal slickness. The viewer gains greater insight into the machinery of the Philadelphia music industry, the African American chitlin circuit and Black celebrity of the 1970s and '80s. A must for anyone interested in Soul music.
