The premise of New Tricks is irresistible: A career-driven British detective hits a career speedbump and is put in charge of a new cold-case division that she thinks is way out of the spotlight. And if that isn't bad enough, she must build a staff from a raggedy crew of retired cops with loads of time on their hands--as well as, it turns out, some pretty great detective skills they're dying to use again. Supervising the oddball group is the former hotshot Det. Supt. Sandra Pullman (played by Amanda Redman with refreshing world-weariness that gives homage to Helen Mirren's great performance in Prime Suspect ), who feels sidelined, and thus frustrated, in this latest assignment. Yet the viewer knows Pullman is perfectionist enough to give this Siberia gig her all, even if her work methods differ wildly from those on her team. Recruited out of various stages of retirement are the deeply gifted English character actors James Bolam (playing recent widower Jack Halford), Alun Armstrong (terrific as the obsessive-compulsive Brian Lane, who left the force after a nervous breakdown), and Dennis Waterman (a former sergeant and hothead who likes his liquor and isn't at all sure about having a lady boss). New Tricks is part police procedural--with a deliciously long running time of 90 minutes per episode--as well as a humorous work dramedy. When Pullman pulls a pile of photos of retired cops from whom to begin to build her team, her first teammate, Halford, grabs the pile to help speed along the process. "Dead, dead, dead, dead, good as, dead…" he says as he winnows down the stack. Yet the "old fart" jokes are few and far between, as it soon becomes clear that the old dogs really can learn, and employ, New Tricks and make dramatic, if sometimes politically dangerous, headway into high profile cases assumed to be long closed. Or are they? Fans of any crime procedural will love New Tricks , as will fans of the far more realistic British TV series that dare to show stars with imperfect teeth or well-worn shoe soles. And yet that realism is part of the utter believability, and totally-grow-on-you charm of New Tricks . -- A.T. Hurley New Tricks: Season 1 (DVD) The BBC drama series adapted from Mary Gaskells classic novels of small town gossip, secrets and romance. 1842. Cranford, a market town in the North West of England, is a place governed by etiquette, custom and above all, an intricate network of ladies. It seems that life has always been conducted according to their social rules, but Cranford is on the cusp of change… Review: Great show and great seller - The show is really enjoyable! The DVDs arrived in perfect condition, and I really appreciate the Seller contacting me ahead of shipping to point out that the DVDs are in the PAL format. Fortunately, my DVD player can handle both PAL and NTSC formats Review: Absolutely Addicting - I purchased this first season because a friend saw it and highly recommended I check it out. Watched the first episode and am now totally addicted to this series. The cast of unique characters each with their own idiosyncracies makes this not only an extremely humorous series but holds up quite well amongst the best dectective series ever produced. One would think that as this series progressed the interaction between the detectives would be predictable but that is not the case at all. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good mystery and an excellent cast each with their own personalities making this a bit offbeat but wonderfully entertaining.

Wonderful DVD but Subtitles on discs 2 and 3 don't work
I have fallen in love with "New Tricks" and ordered all available seasons. The #1 season cost a fortune through an outside vendor and on Amazon Prime. I am an older lady who is hard of hearing. The last two discs said there were subtitles but they wouldn't work and I couldn't hear the dialog. I sent it back and hope to someday get the #1 season without the price gouging. I am surprised Amazon does business with a company that charges so outrageously. I should have ordered from one of the other vendors and now probably will. Amazon is my most favorite place to purchase almost everything.

Enjoying this Detective Series!
Clever British detective series with engaging characters and mostly light-hearted and humorous. Doesn’t take itself too seriously. The caveat to this review is that, like so many television shows, I wouldn’t be able to watch this with children or my parents because of the sexual dialogue at times. There is also an occasional gory crime photo, but that has not been a big feature of this series so far. Media writers are so lacking in creativity and imagination that they have to keep trotting out the sexual innuendos and scenes, attacking God and the Bible, while portraying demonic and witch stuff in titillating fashion. Gets very old! We get through it to have something to watch, but wouldn’t share it with others. Definitely not as good as the Foyle’s War series.

Refreshing, extremely well written with wonderful group of characters
This is an extremely well written detective series. The old detective techniques versus the new technological techniques. All these different techniques blend well together, and the personalities of each "older detective" are entertaining, funny and work so well woven into each story. I didn't think a detective series could live up to the standards of Inspector Morse or Inspector Frost, but this series certainly qualifies to be in that category of great acting, great story and great entertainment. I surely hope I get to see the rest of the series. This is the type of series that I will watch over and over again. Wonderful entertainment and drama with great touches of humour.

Took the plunge on the set, and we're glad we did
Item was as described, promptly dispatched (some extra time required for processing through Customs on one side of the water or the other), nicely packaged, contents in pristine condition, disks absolutely spotless/new. We've just finished binge-watching our way through each and every episode on each and every disk without any problems with playing the disk, navigating the episode, playback of episodes crisp and clear, and so forth. -- The episodes are also great (grin)! (Full disclosure, our DVD player already knew how to play NTSC/PAL and multi-region formats when we got it from Amazon for around $50 years ago. This set was pure plug-and-play, no futzing around with special instructions whatever.)

New Tricks S1
New Tricks S1 is a DVD containing the pilot and first season of the BBC television comic detective show. These one-hour episodes are always hilarious, often poignant, and driven by mystery and suspense as compelling as one would expect from a good detective series - although highly eccentric. The Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad of the London Metropolitan Police is headed by Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman, a former Scotland Yard high flyer disgraced by a hostage-rescue operation in which a dog was shot dead. Her squad consists of three retired detectives, the old dogs asked to take on new tricks. One is a brilliant investigator, a recovering alcoholic who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder. The senior member regularly consults his deceased wife for advice. The youngest member is a would-be playboy, a traditional cop prone to outbursts of temper. The ambitious and authoritarian Pullman believes in playing by the rules and, initially at least, despises what she sees as the old-school thinking of her troops, but keeps discovering that their unorthodox (and often "illegal") methods get results. Together they solve thorny mysteries old and new with a combination of panache and pratfalls which, after having seen several seasons of New Tricks, I still find reliably unpredictable, extremely funny and totally engaging. I bought this disc because I had tried to get my favourite video-rental shop to bring it in. (Sid's Vids in Wilson Creek, BC.) The owner, a woman named Syd, couldn't find Season 1 at her suppliers; it was "out of print," whatever that means in the biz. So I bought her this copy from Amazon, and she has now ordered the subsequent seasons.
