I am replacing my old cabinet upper midranges and the outside speaker dia. is 5"on the speaker basket.Would these fit? Speakers are 43 yrs. old

When installing these speakers which side is negative and which side is positive

The positive and negative terminal identifiers should be printed on the decal on the speaker magnet or on the frame.  It may be difficult to see so grab a magnifying glass.   Sometimes they can be printed on the terminals and not clearly obvious.

The positive terminal may be the one bearing a red dot.

The positive and negative terminals can be determined as follows:   Get a battery or DC power supply.  Get a dropping resistor to put in series with the power supply and speaker terminals.

Connecting the power supply and dropping resistor to the speaker terminals momentarily to  observe the cone movement: If the cone moves outwards then what's connected to the positive side of the power source  is the positive terminal of the speaker.   If the cone moves inwards then what's connected to the positive side of the power source is the negative terminal of the speaker.

PLEASE DO NOTE:  Never connect a speaker directly to a car battery or direct current power source as the current through the speaker can damage it.  Use a dropping resistor of about 40 Ohms or so.  If in doubt about performing such a test have someone knowledgeable in electronics perform it for you.
