No analog/digital output pathways! Near-perfect sound quality.
Upgraded from the Marantz AV7005 recently and have found this to be a well-constructed and wonderfully-sounding pre/pro. The setup process is straightforward and works best through a nearby video monitor. I have one surround speaker which outputs slightly less volume than its neighbor, and the Audyssey setup immediately corrected for this while simultaneously getting the sound perfect for my usual listening spot in the room. Others have already spoken of the sound quality and overall high build quality of the unit, so I won't repeat that here.Of import to me, the phono section is very impressive, and my old AR/Grado combination sounds better than ever. The AM/FM with built in HD Radio abilities is welcome, and the interconnectivity with my iPhone for streaming Spotify, Pandora, and so forth, works smoothly and sounds great. Streaming audio naturally doesn't sound quite as good as a local high end source, but casual listeners will never know that you're streaming unless you tell them.I have one major gripe. The processor does not have a single analog or optical OUT pathway! As a result, it's not possible to connect a tape deck, CD-R, or even a HEOS Link's input pathway. You can playback from a tape deck, but you can't record from another source (say...making a tape from an LP, for example). There are workarounds, perhaps, as one might use the Zone 2/Zone 3 outputs as an approach to this, but that would, of course, negate their availability for the two separate Zones. There are also some volume/setting issues in those cases that make this much more difficult than it has to be. The Zone outputs are analog only, in any case, so a digital output directly to a CD-R is not available at all. This all actually came as a surprise to me, since, never having seen a pre/pro without multiple output capabilities, I hadn't bothered to check on that in the first place. The AV7702 is in the same boat, by the way, and also lacks these outputs - very different in that way from the old AV7005.One minor gripe is the absence of a full printed user manual. The manual comes on CD with the processor, and naturally is available as a pdf online as well, but for four grand, I think it would be reasonable to actually have a printed manual, as the AV7005 did. Some might prefer this new approach, I recognize, as being more green than the alternative.

Solid Pre-Pro / Feature Rich, User Friendly and Stellar Sound Quality
Upgraded from an Integra DCH80.3 - Previously Owned Anthem AVM 50 / Marantz AV7005I. PackagingSame solid packaging as all Marantz products. Nice little touches were the paper (build a mic stand) you can use for Audyssey) Cable labels and CD Manual (which I prefer)Remote is same quality as previous generations, nothing to write home about, but does the job until I program my Harmony One Marantz has a nice IPAD control App that works greatII. SetupEasy to use GUI user interface will walk you through everything, very simple to use and set up Audyssey, though I am going to run it a few more times. Lots of customization. My only complaint here is it took me a bit to finally find the HDMI Control ON feature for ARC. The manual is terrible, it takes you to page 55, then 154 then to 194 and doesn't really show you which menu to select to find it. I would rate the manual a D-III. Build Quality (5/5 Stars)The unit is rock solid, build quality feels much improved over the AV 7005. Interesting note there is much less venting that I expected, even less than its predecessor the AV8801. I did push it on a Blu-Ray Movie and while it does get hot, it is no where near anything that I would be concerned with, though I would allow for proper venting in any HT Setup. All connections are solid, well builtIV. Sound Quality (5/5 Stars)I have not had enough time to truly demo this unit, but I can't say enough on how well it handles both music and Home Theater. I appreciate the fact that it is near silent with my Halo A51/A21 AmpsAt this point the only fair assessment, is that it is perceived only, as I did not do a side by side comparison with my old Pre/Pro, but sound appears to me to be more dynamic, especially on soundtracks from Tron II, Skyfall, and the Hobbit. It handles Lossless audio tracks with every detail of the music and vocals, it really brings out the quality of my Triton 1 SpeakersV. Video Quality (5/5 Stars)This is hard to judge, as I have a Sony XBR65X850B 4K TV and while I do feel that the picture seemed more defined and richer in color, this can all be perceived. Bottom line it didn't detract from picture quality and I felt it addedAdditional Notes:- It only has wireless 2.4Ghz band, it is not dual band wireless, would have really liked it to use the 5Ghz band- This was the easiest setup I have ever done, did not have to deal with Hums or noise, pretty much dead silent- Easily the best experience having to setup a device, overall 100% satisfied with purchase- Have not tested Atmos, or 3d Formats yet, will update when my HT room has been builtGear used in testing: Marantz AV8802 Pre/Pro - Parasound Halo A51 / A21 Amps - GoldenEar: Triton One (main) Triton 7 (surrounds) Aon 3 (Rears) Marantz UD 7007 Blu-Ray Furman Elite 20-PFI - Sony XBR-65X850B 4K, Audiquest King Cobra XLR, Monoprice ultra Slim 18Gbps Active High Speed HDMI Cable with RedMereĀ® Technology, Kimber Kable Speaker Wire 8TC for the front only, Monster for surrounds
