Sudan..A Country Divided
The book provides a solid background from an historical and political perspective.Mr. Cockett: The division that is now South Sudan and Sudan was supposed to bring sustained peace and growth the South. But, shortly after the vote for independence in July 2011, the country fell into a political abyss. With Kiir as President (Dinka) and Machar as Vice President (Neur), the seeds of armed conflict wee born. The writer was in Nuba Mountains 2002-3 in Kauda co-located with Abdel Azziz, then the governor of Nuba but formerly commanded the SPLA-N.Returned in 2008-9 to Juba as part of the train and advise mission. The Bashir government will continually attempt to divide the powers in the South even though on the surface supporting some sort of peace agreement. Certainly, the fact that revenues from Abeyi and other locations are the foundation of Khartoum's existence. As most know, Uganda has found oil in the Lake Albert area..a pipeline is now being built to transit Kenya to the coast. What if a pipeline from Abeyi was sent south to the Lake Albert pumping station, then joined with Uganda's oil for shipment. This would totally inflict tremendous economic pain of the north..and the reason Bashir does not wish stability in the south..or have Machar in power to minimize the prospect of South Sudan-Ugandan oil transportation agreement. Just look the distances from Abeyi to Port of Sudan compared to pumping south to Lake Albert central pumping station.Haiti/Bosnia/Croatia/Sudan/Afghanistan/Iraq/Sudan-Juba & Uganda
