Kali's Story: An Orphaned Polar Bear Rescue

The book is an excellent choice for young children. I gave it as a gift. Beautiful pictures and great text. Just a good story to read to children. Highly recommended.

I was the mystery reader for my children's first grade class and was looking for something non fiction to read that would hold their attention. The school field trip was 2 weeks away and the destination was the Buffalo Zoo! I read this book to the class, showed some maps so they could see how far away Kali's home was, and a few pictures of Kali from the Alaska newspaper (online) when first rescued. The children loved the story, the facts, and that they were going to see how big this cuddly cutie got in one year. The book was a hit and shared with all the classrooms going on the field trip. Tons of facts that sustained a lively question and answer period (for any ages). UPDATE. Kali was moved to the St. Louis Zoo in May 2015

I chose the 5 star rating because I picked this book for a couple of different reasons, I will explain. I volunteered as a mystery reader for my grandson Aiden's kindergarten class in Wheatfield N.Y. I wanted to pick a book that the children would enjoy as well as learn and still be entertaining. Since we live close to Kali's home in the Buffalo Zoo most of the children were familiar with Kali and will be visiting the Zoo on a field trip later this year. This turned out to be a perfect choice because the children not only loved the story and the beautiful illustrations but also learned a lesson in survival. I would highly recommend this wonderful book.

Admittedly I am a huge polar bear fan, but what's special about this book is that it's a real story about a real bear cub. And it has a sweet ending. It's mainly a story directed at children, although I appreciated reading it. At the end of the book are many interesting supplemental information pages about polar bears, both facts and fun, for children.

My students loved this story!

I live in Buffalo where Kali was brought to live with Luna, our polar bear at the Buffalo Zoo. My first grade students were fascinated to hear and see Kali's story and to know that they can go see him in person at our zoo, It is a great story. I would have loved more photos in it.

So far, so good. This was a gift for a great niece, with the name of Kali!

I purchased this for my granddaughter. The text was very easy reading for her, but the pictures were great and the facts in the end of the bookwere most informative. She thoroughly enjoyed the book.

孤児で保護されたカリーの事は知っていたので大喜びで購入しました。が　ちょっと思っていたものとは違い　子供向の写真集でありました。大人の私にちょっと物足りない感じではありましたが、簡単な英語解説ですし、お子様をお持ちの方には是非お勧めしたいと思います。感動のドラマです。
