Overly melodramatic WW2 submarine film
An overly complicated WW2 melodrama which falls far short of other classics like =Run Silent Run Deep=. It's hard to know where to begin with critiques. First of all, the movie begins with setting the action in the South Pacific which is far from the central Pacific and North Pacific where the film takes place.despite the reviews which cite the accuracy of the submarine, like so many WW2 submarine movies, it is completely exaggerated in terms of size and technology. Anyone who has been aboard a WW2 sub knows that they were tiny and cramped compared to the spacious layout in Hollywood movies. The only submarine movie to give a reasonably accurate picture was =Das Boot=. But what really compromises the movie are the multiple plot lines which never get developed. The close relationship between the captain (Ford) and his Exec (Borgnine) is even more awkward and sentimental than the one between Ford and his family who are left to fend for themselves on the Philippines, and the captain's physical exhaustion after Tokyo is never clearly revealed. The movie would have been better if it had focused on the submarine warfare and cleared away most if not all the overly melodramatic and sentimental subplots.

Great old time movie
I watched this movie on late night television when I was in the Navy on shore. It was good back then and so when I saw it I thought I buy it ---- glad I did. Riveting Submarine movie.

Good WWII submarine movie. Excellent action scenes.
This movie may be a bit wrenching on your emotions, due to the difficulty of the command decisions by the captain of the sub. Some people think it is "stupid", but I think if it were actually them there in his shoes they may have did the same thing. If he did not fire on the carrier using the prison ship screen, his superiors may have considered him unfit for command. This would have made him ashamed of himself in front of his only remaining family: the U.S. Navy. However, I think he could have set the torpedo depth deep enough to shoot under said ship and hit the carrier (I am a hardcore sub-sim gamer). But this was an actual real-life account of what happened in WWII, and as such must be depicted as what really happened.Excellent action. Good acting. Very interesting. Good account of social interaction between crew. Good account of captain's family interaction.

Best submarine movie
Very good balance of no action and great action, character building and inside sub mechanics. Well, I was in the USAF, not sub duty, but it was a great movie to watch with a beer after getting lower back shots! Dynamic range for sound, if I got this right, was wide...unless it was my tv. The explosions were very loud and some conversations were low volume..I am losing my hearing.. Hmm. Anyway, A great movie, war movie, in color! Not sure how Glenn Ford's character would do in the real navy after what he did..(not telling!) Get this movie. Now I know why Ernest Borgnine went to PT boats.

Overdue and Finally Out On DVD !
Ever since I got Amazon I was looking for this movie. After a while I gave up. I finally checked it out again and found it on DVD. I ordered it on Feb. 16th and got it on Feb. 20th. This has always been one of my favorite war movies ever. I remember seeing it since elementary school. The picture quality is good on DVD the Sound is only in English Mono and no Subtitles. I won't spoil any part of this movie but as a War Movie Fan it's in my "Top 10 War Movies of All Time" list. It's a "must be purchased" movie on DVD for you war movie lovers keep an open mind and it will rub off on you too. I will say it has Ernest Borgnine and Glenn Ford in their prime and good chemistry between them. The only thing to remember is the video effects for a sub movie were in their infancy (this movie was made in 1958). "Two Thumbs Up" from a "War Movie Junkie !"

I'm very happy it has been resurrected
Haven't seen this for many, many years. I'm very happy it has been resurrected. The story, even though it is fictional, parallels the experience of one man I read about several years ago. I would hate to have to go through what they did.
