Court documents are still on CD/DVD lolz
My wife and I are attorneys with modern laptops. Unfortunately, the legal system (both civil and criminal) still deal with a lot of document storage on CDs and DVDs.This has connected to both a Mac and a PC laptop just fine. We didn't have to do anything but plug it in and load our media into the drive. Some notes: we are both of millennial age and we have laptops that are 2018 models or newer. This could explain our easy experience with this device.

Edited: What's that adage about getting what you pay for?
Edited: I stand by what I have written below, except that I have taken away the second star after having to go through an untelligible dance of mysical furies in order to retrieve a disc that it did not want to eject. Save your money. This is under $20, sure - but if someone tried to sell me a steaming pile of dog turd by saying, "Hey, this is under $20!" I would never hand over my cash.Let's say this up front: Apple overcharges for their external drives. No question about it. I was in the market for a new one because my overpriced Apple one is unreliable. I bought this one because it had generally favorable reviews and because the price was fantastic. I should've listened more closely to the age-old wisdom. I generally need an external drive to import CDs to my Mac. This one has generally done that so far - eventually. Even the ones that my Apple drive spits back out. That's why I gave it a second star. But, ye gods, is it frustrating. It often takes multiple attempts to get something imported - including having to restart my laptop. It doesn't alwasy seem to recognize that I've put a disc in. It doesn't always eject when I want it to. Sometimes it ejects when I don't want it to. Bottom line: If you're happy to sacrifice efficiency for a few dollars, then go for it. It seems to work eventually. But wow is it infuriating in the process.

Works well with added software
I bought this to play DVD’s and even though it claims to automatically play when plugged into the USB it didn’t work for me with Windows 8 and the Media Player on my computer. I had to install VLC Media first and then it worked fine. I didn’t have the same issue with CD’s because they worked fine with the Media Player. Once I figured this out I was able to use and enjoy this drive.

Used a few times, then died
I bought it June 2019, used it a few (maybe three) times, tried it again yesterday, February 2020, and it has died. Even at this price, I expected more.

Not a CD/DVD Burner
AS an optical disc drive it's great and a good value.Do not buy if you are looking for a USB CD/DVD Burner! It will not do this. I tried using several programs including Cyberlink PowerDVD 18 which cost me nearly 95 dollars. Tried to burn a simple CD using this drive and it simply causes an error each time. Took a little while to figure it out, but if you look at the drives face plate it does not have any of logo that prove it is a burner.

Disc holder was always popping out and quit working after a year
If I even nudged it while there was a disc in it and it was connected to my computer, it would pop the disc holder out. If was very finicky. The program it wanted me to use to play dvds and cds kept telling me I didn't have the rights to play the disc. I had to download a different program. And then I had had it just over a year and it stopped working all together.

Working perfect Windows 10 gaming computer.
Our new powerful gaming computer has no optical drive. This plugs in the USB and works perfect, CD's and DVD's. Not for BlueRay of course.
