Mysteries of the Mummy Kids
This is a great little book! Lots of great quality images of mummies from around the world. The text is informative with out being too detailed, I would put an reading level of about 10 years old on this one (though I am 38 and just wanted it for my collection). I especially love the chapters devoted to the Mummies of South America (Chile in particular). Really interesting casual read, with beautiful full color images I also recommend Bodies From The Bog - James Deem, for similar format, image quality and reading level.

nice
my daughter loves this book. it seemed a little morbid to me with all the sacrifice talk but she is totally fine with it. She is only 6 but reading at a much higher level.

A Brave Subject Matter to Take On
The fact is, humans haven't always been kind to children. This book explores the way history has both cherished and disregarded kids, even in their death. All of Kelly’s work is amazing and unique. She chooses subject matter that truly appeals to kids. And she writes as if she understands the child brain. She’s truly one of the best nonfiction writers out there.

but I find myself reading it like a National Discovery
This book is fascinating. The prose is inviting & accessible for kids, but I find myself reading it like a National Discovery...and I'm a grown woman! The photography is stunning, and it's one of those books that my kids are just drawn to. Love Kelly's books.

My 6-year-old is typically easily scared, but she found this book at the library and wanted to check it out. It was 2 weeks before she had the courage to open it, but she quickly became fascinated by the stories within. Fantastic book, great pictures, lots of concise details given. Written on the level of an 8-12 year old. Now we're buying our own copy.

An Enthralling Read
I admit that I first felt this book was frightening and gruesome. However, as you read it, you become more engaged and interested. The author does a very good job of being respectful to the mummies and the people they used to be. I use this book in my classroom with advanced 5th grade readers and they love it. Some are nervous at first (as I was) but soon realize the science and compassion behind what is written. My lower readers will even beg to read it because it is so intriguing. The author truly does a good job of being a caring presenter of what could be very difficult material.

Not for young readers, or the squeamish
Parents/guardians/teachers beware: I accidentally came across this book in the library. The photo on the jacket was attention-grabbing and I thought it might be about children who had been mummified as part of their culture's post-mortem care, or about 'Ice-man' type accidental remains that have been discovered. However, the half-dozen chapters I perused were disturbingly violent and cruel. There were graphic descriptions of how each child was violently killed, sometimes tortured, for unknown reasons. They were accompanied by vivid photos of the mummies - some with ropes still tied around their necks or arms, others propped up in chairs in their burial dress. Speculation was made about religious sacrifice or societal rejection. It was more a CSI-type book of unsolved childhood murders than a book appropriate for kids to read. This book may be appropriate for those doing research or wanting in-depth information on the topic, but not at all appropriate for younger, more easily frightened, readers.
