Maybe not the Rolls Royce of chalk but still, like, a really dope Lexus.
This is excellent chalk. If you, like me, hate the squeaks and cracks of Prang and Crayola then splurge a little.I've used Hagoromo chalk for many years. I was told that the company shut down and stopped producing new chalk. For a while the price had skyrocketed but this was closer to the old price. I don't know if they changed their minds or if they sold the name to another company or if there's another explanation. I can say that this chalk is at least a good approximation of what I'd used for years. It is noticeably different and, in my opinion, markedly worse but it's still excellent chalk. Also, for what it's worth, my box didn't have any broken pieces.

OK -- I won't insist that we change our chalkboards to whiteboards
I just taught my first calculus class using Hagoromo chalk and it was a dream. I don't have the experience to compare the Korean product to the Japanese product (sadly), but bottom line -- it is an experience far superior to using the institution-provided Crayola chalk, which I break all the time and which is scratchy. This chalk is softer so I can use a lighter touch and get the same boldness. I used about one-sixth of a piece for a class, so assuming I throw away the last sixth of each piece I'd conservatively get about 360 classes out of a box of 72.I used to be adamant about converting our building's chalkboards to whiteboards because I hated using chalk, but now with Hagoromo -- I'm finally OK with using chalk every day.

Best chalk I've ever used.
Feels sturdy, writes smooth, erases well. As far as chalk goes, it is a pleasure to use. I know, it's hard for some people to understand what can be so special about a brand of chalk, but after using so much of that cheap chalk that is weighs almost nothing, breaks all the time, and doesn't want to erase you really can appreciate how nice this chalk is to use. If you are going through the effort of reading chalk reviews, then I suspect you will know what I am talking about and I would HIGHLY recommend trying out this chalk.

This is a teacher's treat. Buy some for a teacher you love.
I would never have believed that there was so much difference in chalk. This chalk is such a pleasure to write with - no screeching, no breakage or chipping, far less chalk dust than the brands the school buys. I have both white boards and chalk boards in my classroom, and this was an impulse buy, but after trying it, it will be something I treat myself to as time goes by. All the pieces arrived unbroken and the packaging protection was phenomenal. This erases soooooo much cleaner than Crayola and Prang. I have read that this is a new formulation and that the old was better - I don't know how. This stuff glides across a chalkboard like butter across a warm pan. I am going to hoard this for myself and make the kids write with the not-as-nice chalk. I decided to try the colored chalk as well, and it also is of much higher quality. It is far more pigmented, erases without ghosting, and delivers a clean, colorful line.

Best Chalk I've Used!
I never did get to use the original Japanese product, however, when I saw Korea was producing this item, I jumped on it. I am so glad I did! It writes smoothly, doesn't leave the residue on my fingers, feels more robust than normal chalk, and erases cleanly. My colleagues began remarking on this new "miracle chalk" when I'd leave used ones behind in the classroom. Now they're discussing purchasing cases for the department as a whole. I've enjoyed using it so much that I even bought a case of the colored chalk, although I haven't had a chance to use it, yet. I write a lot for my classes, and I would estimate I use half of a stick per fifty-minute class, equating to approximately 144 classes per case. I now understand why everyone was hoarding the original.

Great chalk if you like physics.
The chalk is good, but I do not enjoy it as well as my Prang Hygieia chalk. Key thing i didn't like was the soap stone feeling when used on my board. Also its doesn't show as well as prang. When erased you can it leaves the writing which bleeds through the chalk dust. Kind of look like I used grease to write with. Anyways.Key great features: it does not score the board, and writes very smoothly. It find the price reasonable for the amount and how durable the chalk is. The chalk is dustless in a sense. One side is slightly yellow so if you ocd and only want to use one side. It becomes quickly identifiable which side to grab. Its slightly bigger then regular chalk so it doesn't break in your hand if you are a super saiyan like me.Dealer sent it faster then I expected. All pieces were in tact. They did well job at shipping this product.

It really is excellent chalk.
Well, it's chalk. So in the world of things to be picky about, it's generally low priority. But for those who must use chalk at a board with regularity, it's the cream of the crop. It's chalk in every sense, while being silky in its writing. Almost like some soft waxy hybrid with chalk. But it also is strong and not as brittle as other chalks. It require's almost no pressure for clean lines to be written. At times, it seems like what I would imagine writing on a mirror in lipstick would be like. Just smooth and frictionless, while not being so soft and wasteful as that would be. It's regular chalk, except better. They've made a better mousetrap here.I have not been able to try to the original japanese legendary chalk itself, but this current (south korean I believe?) version is certainly excellent chalk. I have ordered some other brand of japanese chalk that's supposed to be a clone attempt and am curious to see how it measures up. This is more expensive, but it's the rolls royce of chalk. You do get a better chalk experience, for whatever that is worth to you.Glad to know this product is out there for my chalk needs. Makes me wish I had to use a chalkboard more than once a week.Update: This is good chalk. Definitely puts up the smoothest, creamiest lines. But the Umajirushi DC Chalk DX is easier to write with. As in, less felt friction with when writing. The Hagoromo is buttery creamy smooth, but is a little harder (as in more frictionful) to write with. But this Hagoromo is more expensive, but had better packaging for shipping, and none were broken upon arrival. The Umajirushi had 8+ broken sticks. In the end, it's all just chalk. No doubt the hagoromo is good chalk, but it ain't the only chalk in town. The Umajirushi can give it a run.

Great purchase
Amazing chalk, worth the hype over it. All pieces also came in un broken because of unique packing system hagaromo uses. Smoothest writing chalk I have ever used. Seems to last longer as well. Use mine frequently, and have only gotten half way through the first stick.
