The ship was laid down at the "Galley island" in St. Petersburg May 20, 1900, it entered into service in October 1904. The armament of the ship were four 305-mm s, twelve 152-mm s and over forty s caliber from 75mm to 47 mm. In preparation for the campaign in the Far East "Orel " received telescopic s for s caliber 75 to 305 mm, range finders and stations of wireless telegraphy. As part of the 2nd Pacific Squadron participated in the Russian-Japanese War of 1904-1905. in the Tsushima battle May 14, 1905 has received many hits of Japanese shells, but kept fighting capacity.
