Excellent Book
This is an excellent book about the life and music of Kurt Cobain told from the perspective of the author - Danny Goldberg. I'm giving this book five stars because it does a good job of telling Kurt's story from the author's perspective. This book is for music lovers, particularly those from the Seattle grunge music era.

For True Fans...
This is not a biography of Kurt's life, but rather the author's very honest reflections of his time with Kurt during his management of Nirvana. This book helps to fill a lot of gaps that other books & documentaries leave out. It gives a beautiful account of Kurt's creative genius by those who worked with him. The writing is easy to read (finished the book in 2 days) and it feels like the author is taking you along for the ride. The author is forthcoming about what are facts and what are his or other's perceptions.More than anything, this is the closest account of what Kurt's life was like during the rise to stardom, and what it was like for those who witnessed the gift and curse of his genius.I cried the last chapter. I knew what was coming, but I felt it in a very different way after reading the previous chapters.

Danny Goldberg is to Band Managers, what Kurt Cobain is to Creative Geniuses.
If you’re a Nirvana fan and want an entirely new positive perspective on Kurt’s life. This should do it. With that said, I imagine it will take any Nirvana fan in a pandemic not more than two days to finish this book. With it, you leave with a realization that Kurt was lucky to have Danny in his life. Because unlike many who (speculatively) knew Kurt, Goldberg didn’t pepper his relationship with any taboo, and explains first hand how each major event in Kurt’s professional life came with an underlying, albeit optimistic sense of worry.Danny was a music manager managing a creative genius who was an inspiration to all of us. You will be glad he did. In fact, it makes you wish the guy also worked with Layne or Amy Winehouse because who knows what would happen if those two had at least ONE genuine major label “suit” in their professional lives.Having been fully exposed to this industry at one point in my life, I never knew someone like him could exist in the world of Kurt Cobain. Goes to show you that in the end, it was a complete disease that Kurt suffered from.

Recommend to All True Fans
Kurt is my favorite musician and inspired me to write my own songs. I've been a fan for years and have read many books about him/Nirvana. Though I appreciate the music of many, there's only a few that I connect with on a deeper level. Kurt is one of them. As a fan, I really enjoyed this book. It is told from the perspective of a manager and personal friend which makes it different from other books. I did learn a little bit more but most of the information in the book is not new. I liked that it gave another view of him and did not focus overtly on his untimely death. His drug use and downward spiral are included but it focused more on his intelligence, kindness and other positive aspects of his personality while not denying his imperfections (which we all have). Danny hopes that eventually his death will not overshadow the music. I think this book is a positive step in that direction but the cynic in me is not sure it will ever change. I knew how intelligent, brilliant and ambitious Kurt was as a musician prior to reading Serving the Servant but this book reveals that side of him even more so, dispelling some of the myths about him...especially to the uninitiated. Thank you Danny for sharing with us! I really appreciated your book.

New Perspectives on a Familiar Story
I’ve read a few biographies of Cobain, and I appreciate this one for its focus on Cobain’s life in L.A. and its continuous attention to Cobain’s aesthetic practice. Goldberg admits to seeing Cobain through “rose-colored glasses,” and these glasses certainly skew his interpretation of some events (KC’s petty jealousy of other Seattle bands, for example) and lead to a few outrageous claims (Nirvana wrote more overtly political songs than R.E.M. did, which makes you wonder if he ever listened to an R.E.M. record). But this view does fuel his attention to valuing Cobain as a creator: music (obviously), visual (which we mostly knew about), and video (which was new to me and really interesting). While Grohl’s lack of participation with the book raises some questions, give this a read if you’re at all interested in Cobain beyond the “tortured soul, troubled boy” narrative. And to the reviewer who put down the book because Goldberg is affiliated with the ACLU: read the liner notes to Incesticide because Nirvana might not be the band you think it was.

Nothing new but nothing bad
Was advertised new, but it arrived with a black sharpie marking across a portion of the top pages. The book had stains along the outer edges.Fans of Cobain will find little new in this book; however, it is a good simple recollection of the period when Nirvana dotted the landscape.

A different look at Kurt's life
This book actually picks up in the middle of the story in my opinion right before the release of the album nevermind which made Kurt a huge star it's not a awful book but I do think heavier than heaven was a better book than this one but this book is worth reading it does look at Kurt' and courtney from a different point of view and it did kinda make me think

Another book for the "Nirvana Fan" Pile - But a worthwhile one
Con first - you've heard 90% of this, albeit in a different "voice" in other books.Pros :Despite being a label guy, Goldberg writes with a sympathetic voice for himself and almost everyone he writes about. The overall tone is positive, with the occasional "I didn't approve of this" negativity. There are enough new stories to be well worth the price of admission. And he gives a unique spin on a handful of stories you probably know.Summary - look, it's 2019. If you are still fiending for new Nirvana books, this is it. Legit insight - it has a tone that balances breezy and easy to read, with some "cool uncle" criticisms. It's not perfect, but with how viciously the Nirvana / Cobain teat has been milked, this is the best book we could hope for.

There's not much new info about Kurt or Nirvana given in this book.Courtney Love helped him to write this, so if you're hoping to finally find out anything to do with what Danny's (ex)wife -Rosemary Carroll -Kurt and Courtney's lawyer knew about or found and then told Tom Grant about, don't bother with this book.
