Great Story!!!
Michael Robotham is my favorite author, and I have read several of his books. I have already read the two Cyrus Haven books, which are terrific. I absolutely loved this book - “The Suspect”. Great characters, great story, stayed up all night for a few nights reading to get to the end and am excited that there are 8 more books in this series. Joe O’Louglin is a very well drawn character, and it is nice to see where some of Cyrus’s traits in Mr. Robotham’s newer series are derived from. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to start the second one in this series.

Not his best
I love this author, having read 6-8 of his books and will continue reading. This was I think his first and wasn't as good as the others. While an interesting story with interesting characters that weren't as good or as bad as we first thought, they weren't as developed or sympathetic as in other books. My biggest beef was the shrink protagonist not being as smart as I would expect a shrink or protagonist to be, and that he did things where I just couldn't suspend disbelief for the purposes of reading the novel. Others had made the same complaint in reviews and, having so enjoyed other books, I dismissed the reviewers as cranks. But came to agree. The author was probably still honing his craft is all.

and I leant a great deal about this illness
I have been working my way through Michael Robotham's books, but I wish I had started with this one!It really explains how Professor Joseph O'loughlin and Detective Vincent Ruiz met and the start of their association. It also explains the start of Joe O'loughlin' s Parkinson Disease , and I leant a great deal about this illness. As in all his books, Michael weaves a tale that is a page turner. I really enjoyed this book, as I have all his others, I'm a number one fan. This book reminds us that there are a lot of disturbed people out there! but there is always help at hand. Sometimes all is not as it seems! My heart beat went up quite a few times as I imagined myself in this situation , frightening. As usual I had many late nights reading this novel. I never like to read too much of the story in a review , so I'm not telling you all about the plot, so just do yourself a favour and buy this book. Or better still, ask the family to buy you some of his excellent stories ( preferably in order) for a Christmas gift that will have you happily addicted over the Christmas holidays.

This is the First book in the Joseph O'Loughlin Series.
I discovered the Joseph O'Loughlin series when I received a daily e-mail regarding bargain Kindle books. It was for the fourth book by Michael Robotham, Shatter. I have now gone back and read the first book, Suspect; the second book, Lost, the third book (which really isn't about Joe), The Night Freight. All were good books because this author is a fantastic writer. He has a style of writing that holds your interest throughout all of his books. My only suggestion, is that folks might want to read his earlier books. While the books can stand alone, I am recommending to all my friends that they read them in order (maybe skipping The Night Ferry) because once you read one of his books, I think you may just fall in love with his style of writing, like I did. To date, there are 7 books. I have not read the sixth book, The Wreckage, yet (because it isn't about Joe either), but I have read his latest,Say You're Sorry. I truly enjoyed all six books. and am looking forward to reading more of his books in this series.

Compelling, original
I read lots of mysteries, and this is one of my favorites. It’s the first I’ve read by this author, but it certainly won’t be the last. Once things get started, the suspense mounts with many twists and turns. We’ll-written in a workmanlike style.

Difficult to put down.
Heard about this writer via KQED's Forum, a *Great* talk show in the Bay Area. Always on the lookout for well written suspense/crime/mystery genres. I think this was the first book of his that I read. ( read it last year...). At any rate, I've read at least two more in his oeuvre & ordered up another. Don't know how it happened but have found myself addicted to the mystery/crime/thriller & zombie genres. The latter only in film. I can only read so much "Literature." ( There is so much acute snobbery about reading anything that hasn't been granted the title, "Literature." Life is short, read what you want for peetsake!)So if you want to curl up and escape and possibly be kept up all night into the next day I suggest giving Mr. Robotham a try. Let's just say, he's kind of a "flow" read. You put off going to the loo just to keep reading.

A Little Long, But Good
A psychologist with a detective’s mind finds himself deep in trouble getting too close to a series of murders. And this a first novel—wow. Michael Robotham is my new favorite author. Written in the first person, this story brings it all so close up. A winner.

The master of clever suspense.
As always, Michael Robotham gave us a brilliant thriller with a plot full of twists and leading characters that make my heart melt. No matter how often I read this book, it never fails to mesmerize me.

Robotham does have the ability to make you cry for character!
The real reason I bought this book was because Robotham is my favourite author, Lee Child's favourite. I did not think I'll replace Child with Michael Robotham!Robotham has such a way with his words that it makes you want to rip the book before you have even completed reading it! I never felt like putting the book down even after thinking that I'll do so after reading some particular chapter and go to sleep. And even if I did do that and go to bed, I never felt like sleeping because of the book! It kept me up all nights until I finished reading it!Worth the buy!

Engrossing
I enjoyed the psychological insights, the plot twists and turns, and it is not banal and predictable - I also found it clever and believable, not far fetched. The teamwork between the major protagonists is nice too.

Excellent
Une histoire crédible et surprenante. Le suspense se construit progressivement jusqu'au moment où il devient difficile de lâcher le livre.
