Terms of Endearment: A Novel

Wonderful
As if I expected anything less from Larry McMurtry…an absolutely fantastic read. Layered character development and shies away from tropes and cliches that can grow tiresome in the development of plot. Just like in the Lonesome Dove tetralogy, where I couldn’t predict anything that would happen, this too fell into that same level of unpredictability. Hilarious and heartbreaking. Loved it all.

master of the form at work
The author writes distinctive dialog and creates authentic characters. Readers who know the movie can’t help but hear Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger as they follow their stormy relationship.

Better than I remembered.
Having fallen in love with Larry McMurtry’s writing 40 or 50 years ago, I had forgotten how funny, endearing, and touching this novel is. I also loved the movie that was adapted from it, but it really doesn’t hold a candle to the book. I’m glad to have rediscovered it, and can’t recommend it highly enough.

dragged a bit, but me likey
Dragged at times, but I cried at the end which I’ve only done once before (American Pastoral). I love McMurtry.

Enduring and Important
Had not seen the film in years and on a whim, I replayed it two years after I lost my son. I believe it is an outstanding, very personal, view into the complicated issue of losing a child. As a member of the not-so-great child-loss club, I know first-hand of the long grief process; something each parent has to walk through on his/her own terms. The real stars of this film are the two young sons who are losing their mother. I have read that MacLaine and Winger disliked each other immensely, the tension from their personal conflict seems to translate well into the body of the story. MacLaine, Winger, Nicholson, and Daniels give outstandingand enduring performances that capture the hearts and minds of those who journey through this bittersweet masterpiece with this fine cast.

Larry McMurtry is one of my favorite writers having discovered him along with many others with Lonesome Dove. His characters are believable and his storytelling is superb.

incredible reading experience
I have been avidly reading McMurtry’s books the last year or so. This one might be the best. It is very unlike the movie so there were plenty of surprises to enjoy. McMurtry is masterful at drawing characters that are both colorful and real. I am only sad I finished it.

Wonderful, extraordinary
This marvellous book is peopled by unforgettable characters and fabulous dialogue. It is in two parts, the second of which relates more to the film of the same name but, for me it is the first part which introduces the reader to the many wonderful characters around Aurora Greenway, the heroine, that is so extraordinary.

Larry McMurtry has always been one of my most favourite authors of all time and I have to admit to having read this book several times over many years. It was still amusing and topical to read recently and I would say do try it for a treat and follow on with his other books.

By no means a classic
It has not stood the test of time all that well and is, at best, slight in both its insights and its narrative interest.
