If you need to get it in one file you can combine the jpgs. Not tried the pdf facility. **Q: Can you scan onto Microsoft Word** A: As with all scanners it scans a graphic image (a grid of dots recording the colour of each dot) into a graphic file (usually compressed into a jpeg file). Some scanners can produce a pdf file but this is still as a graphic image. MS Word files are text files, i.e. an ASCII code for each character plus format information (typeface, colour, size, etc.) and layout information (paras, spacing, margins, etc.). Your task is then to extract the text information for MS Word from the graphic information gathered by the scanner. This operation is called Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for which one can get special programs and/or, maybe, online conversion facilities. I use an old version of ABBYY Fine Reader which came with a scanner (and has a spell check in several languages) but I think it may be quite pricey nd there may be alternatives. The output of an OCR program should be very carefully checked. The portable scanner is very useful in many situations, being more portable than a flatbed scanner, albeit not capable of the same high quality reesults. Mine has worked well for what I have needed it for. **Q: can you scan photo negatives?** A: I have an Epson V600 Photo scanner which is like normal flatbed scanners but has a light in the lid to illuminate negatives and slides. It also does prints, docs, etc. It can do high quality scans but it is slow and not portable. I also have a portable scanner exactly like the AOZBZ (marketed under another name). It has no such backlight and might work with negs/slides only if you could provide your own even backlight of the correct brightness. I've used it to scan/OCR some large books for auto-translation into English. I think your best course would probably be to get a photo scanner such as those made/marketed by DigitNow. I also have one of these for preliminary/cataloging lots of photos quickly without needing high quality scans. These are a bit like a primitive digital camera. They are very fast and the quality is adequate for some purposes. One of thse might be your best bet, depending on your requirement. A bit tricky to use effectively but gets easier with practice. After a few weeks stopped working. Just get error message whenever it starts up.
