Worth the purchase
This is a great tool. I have put this product to the test. I mostly use it seasonally at work when it is time to plant summer and winter annuals. The digging tool, as it is called, is great to have in your arsenal. If you are planting against an small tree or shrub, and the roots have grown into your annual bed, the serrated edge is great! Just saw though the roots and remove, it's that easy. Don't have that on most box store spades. If you have some pretty compacted soil that you are working in, the sharp point on the tool makes life a little more bearable at the time.Only problem I have had with it is that the wooden handle has started to come apart, which started to happen after a couple of seasons of work. Which I get it, it's going to happen, just wanted to mention it. I'll tell you this, I've had it a couple of years now and overall, I am pleased with it's quality for what I paid for the tool.

This is the 3rd hori hori I've owned. 1st 2 where craftsman purchase on clearance. They broke and were apparently cast from pot metal. They lasted long enough to convenience me that the concept was good. After searching on line I determined that I wanted a carbon steel one (verses stainless) and found this one and like $$. It arrived in 2 days. As I expected the sheath is cheaply made vinyl (which they all seam to be) and it was very dull (which I expected). Well, 2 min w/ a bastard file and I had an impressive hard working general weeding, trimming, and planting tool. Make no mistake, this is a crude tool that does an amazing job. It does the hard stuff really well. I cannot speak to the more expensive ones, as to if they are any better, but I plan on giving a few of these to friends as gifts and have no intention on spending any more when this one works so well. Dave L. PS, I live in MD and the soil is very hard, I have broken or bent several gardening tools over the years. Hope this helps.

You will dig it
This is a very good tool for the garden enthusiast. Actually after using it for some time now for various landscape projects I would say it is an essential tool. It is quite versatile and comes in handy for a variety of gardening needs. Since it is extremely durable it is a fantastic digging tool for planting small transplants, digging up weeds and perfect for planting bulbs in the fall. If you are looking for a good tool garden use in a number of different ways this is a perfect hand tool. It is an ideal supplement and addition to any garden tool arsenal to attack and create beauty in your own backyard. The only drawback, hence the four stars instead of five is that the handle could be a little more comfortable to grip. I owned a similar tool I bought from Japanese Woodworker that had a more ergonomic handle. cost twice as much and was actually a better tool, comfort wise, but for the price it is a good choice.

Great for Digging up Hidden Treasures
I looked and looked for the right digging tool at the right price for my husband to use with his Garrett Metal Detector and I chose this Sun Joe Hori-Hori. It is perfect for his needs. The blade is very sturdy steel, slightly curved inward to use as a small shovel, and has depth markings so he can know how far down to dig for hidden treasures. The handle is wood and the whole tool has a nice, slightly hefty feel to it. The sheath that comes with it is better than nothing and better sheaths are easy to find. It was the tool that I wanted for him. I'm not sure how far the tang goes into the handle but he did some serious digging with it just yesterday and it felt solid the entire time.

Ultimate multiuse knife, trowel
Best multipurpose knife I have ever bought, except for maybe skinning an animal. I am so pleased with this "garden tool" I have put up all my knives.. ones I paid $50 -$200 for because this does it all without the eyes bulging for a guy carrying a sheath knife in Lowe's. Made a sheath to carry it and my garden shrub clippers and viola, they even let me into the movies. It doesn't cut paper, not much of a sharp edge, BUT great mini saw, good point, center of blade width is concave like a trowel, blade is almost as thick as a file, and unbreakable. Uses from yard work, garden, foraging, summer camp. Almost equal to my K-bar, but again without the civvies staring and thinking "Rambo." Cost is so low that if it does break, another is just an overnight away. Maybe unbreakable, God knows I've tried. Going to get more for Christmas. Very Highly Recommended

Everyone needs one of these
A couple of years ago, I had seen this type of gardening knife mentioned in an article I was reading, and looked everywhere to find one - Amazon to the rescue!!!! I have since bought several as gifts, and an extra one for myself. They are perfect for digging out weeds, or loosening up soil, and the serrated edge will cut thru small branches with ease. They're very sturdy - unlike the kitchen knives I used to use before discovering the Hori-Hori knives. I'm not sure even I can break it, and I've used it to pry things (not it's normal use), as well as digging out roots and general weeds. It's marked in inches for use in planting bulbs and such, so you don't need to carry around a tape measure. The wooden handle is very comfortable to hold, and I have small hands. If you buy one, you'll wonder how you ever gardened without it!!! Well worth the slightly pricey cost. And don't be fooled - there are less expensive ones on the market, but they don't appear to be as sturdy.

My new best friend
I love this garden tool. The soil in my area has a high clay content and lots of alluvial stones. When the soil is dry it's like cement. When it is wet it is like wet cement. Either way, very hard to work. I also have a lot of twitch grass which invegals its way into my gardens. This knife cuts through all of the above and it is so strong it makes cultivating and weeding much easier than any other tool I have tried. I think I am going to buy a second one in case I misplace this one or they stop making them.

The Samurai of Garden Tools
Actually the Sun Joe Hori-hori tool deserves 5 stars but the sheath doesn't live up to the same quality. At first I thought the tool too heavy, but after using it pretty abusively in heavy clay soil, rocky spots, digging & prying, I appreciate its robustness. Makes a warrior gardener out of anyone!

Not what I expected, the knife was too big and the cover too weak. I found a real one at a local store, but will keep this for some of my garden/house projects
