Ushered in the '10s with a resounding bang
During 2009, the year the Great Recession was at its absolute worst point, 22-year-old Ke$ha Sebert, born in California but principally raised in Tennessee, was quietly honing her skills for a release that would completely blow the cobwebs off of the atmosphere of overriding economic gloom and doom that pervaded the climate at the time. That came on New Year's Day 2010, when the new decade and a new era in party dance music was forever ushered in, with the release of her debut full-length "Animal."I first was exposed to Ke$ha's unique craft when I by chance heard "Tik Tok" on the radio for the first time in the car at one point. My jaw literally dropped at what I had just witnessed. It was so refreshing, original, inventive and exciting. She actually spearheaded a whole new genre here, of party-till-you-puke themed, nonstop electro dance-pop music. Just as the similarly-aged Alanis Morissette stormed onto the scene in the mid-'90s, you simply did not have anything like this in music before 2009, making Ke$ha a true breakout phenomenon.I will never understand why "Animal" was rightfully a worldwide multi-platinum smash in 2010, and yet from so many of the reviews you read of it here on Amazon, you'd think it was merely a mediocre release and that its success was undeserved. Nothing could be further from the truth. I just previewed the entire 46-minute disc for this review and didn't count one weak song or moment of filler on it. So many people seem to slam this talented young woman because her lyrics by first appearance seem to endorse a nonstop carefree, drunken, promiscuous, all-day, all-night party lifestyle. Well, to counter this, I think all you need do is look to the bio provided here on Amazon and hear it from Ke$ha herself: "I want my music to be fun, unapologetic, rowdy, quirky, humorous, and interesting, but with substance behind it. I'm an emotional person underneath all my fronting." ...Ke$ha is not just a caricature, she IS a real person, a true talent and a true artist. I think this CD is so entertaining and FUN to listen to from beginning to end. Songs like "Blind" and the title track are showcases for mastermind producer Dr. Luke's ingenious electronic soundscapes and beats. And make no bones about it, the all-time classic "Tik Tok" has forever carved its place a slot amid many an all-night rave or underground dance party's DJ setlist. To close, Ke$ha's almost overnight rise to fame was genuinely exciting and the breakout success story of 2009/10. Not since earlier Avril Lavigne have I felt this passionately about a new female artist's music. No matter what the naysayers who like to slander her have to say, Ke$ha is a worldwide pop music powerhouse that should enjoy a long and fruitful career. Highly recommended!!

Those who hate infectious electro pop, pop rock and dance need not apply
Ke$ha will probably get slammed by the onslaught of web crawlers who love to bash anything that isn't `art rock' or `smart music,' a definite plague that has resulted from the dawn of the internet age. We're talking those who scathingly refer to pop as throwaway and forgettable, despite the fact that this is the very music that has proven time and again that it gets stuck in your head and has huge staying and comeback power. Not sure why they even bother wasting their precious holier-than-everyone time attacking music they'd never listen to--and I can't imagine what would have been posted about the music I loved as a kid had the internet existed. Those who don't like dance and pop music shouldn't--you know--bother talking about it so much. If you don't like a certain music genre, then why would those who DO like that genre really CARE what you think? Don't quite get that.Having said that, let's get into the adolescent pop dance perfection that is the Ke$ha CD. Forget the hit singles "Blah Blah Blah" and "Tik Tok"--those who love party pop and dance music will go wild for this album. Imagine if Avril Lavigne recorded a dance rock record ripe with electronics and you pretty much have Ke$ha, who covers everything from puking at parties to ragging on `old' men who look at her and think they're going to get some. Straight up rocking dance tracks include "Your Love Is My Drug," "Take It Off," the adrenaline rush "Kiss and Tell," the electro punk "Party at a Rich Dude's House," the more moody dance tracks "Blind" and "Dancing With Tears in My Eyes" (no, not a cover of the Ultravox new wave classic), "Boots & Boys," and "Animal." "Stephen" sort of takes the classic upbeat girl group pop sound of the 60s and gives it a modern twist. "Hungover" and "Back Stabber" are the closest thing you get to actual Avril Lavigne pop rock. And then there's the quirky, almost Tom Tom Clubish "Dinosaur." But it doesn't end there. The UK edition of this CD has two must-have bonus tracks. "V.I.P". is a sleazy sexy electro dance rocker with attitude and atmosphere. "Dirty Picture Part 2" is a surprisingly hardcore electro house track, which is actually by Taio Cruz featuring Ke$ha.

Notwithstanding an overall lack of interest in this genre of music I must admit to liking this. The couple of hit singles were good enough to download so I was inspired to purchse the entire album, but only after it came out on vinyl. And that I think is the key to my rating it a 4 and not a 3 star album. The reason for that is simple. As a vinyl disc, I only listen to one and no more than two sides on any given day. So it's either 3 or 6 cuts that I hear. It keeps me from being over-exposed to it. But generally speaking this is so similar to the others in this genre getting airplay that it becomes a simple matter of how much of this stuff does one want to own and where to start. For me it's either with Ke$ha or Lady Gaga. And one is enough. But, since it appeals to someone not in love with this type of music, it must be a worthy purchase for those who do.
