Sadly, Self-Pitying Swashbuckling (Great Art, Though)
Epic Collection Volume 4 (1-3 are, happily, already available even with the Epics' non-chronological release schedule), takes us from 1970 to 1972 and begins with ol' Hornhead a desperate man in love. Following his break-up with long-time love-interest Karen Page, he follows her to Los Angeles where she is pursuing a new career as an actress. It was probably meant to shake the title up, but in reality it just means a few issues where DD hangs around movie studios rather than the streets of New York. It's not long before he's back in the big city; Gene 'the Dean' Colan remains the regular artist, but Gerry Conway takes over as writer. Unfortunately, I found the latter a change for the worst. While obviously trying to emulate the 'heroes with problems'/'inner torment' model of superheroes pioneered by Stan Lee and Roy Thomas, Conway's Matt Murdock just comes across as constantly whining; his introspections are so melodramatic and over-the-top, so omnipresent in every issue whether there's reason for them or not, that it becomes intensely irritating.Things look up when Black Widow enters the scene, teaming up with the man without fear and promising a different dynamic as she offers the prospect of new partnership in both crime-fighting and love. Sadly, that comes towards the end of this jumbo volume (25 issues!); we'll just have to wait until volume 5 for the bulk of their team-up. While I may complain about the writing, it has to be said that Colan's art is never less than a joy - moody, dynamic and cinematic - making this book worth a buy even if you didn't read a single word.Extras include two annual covers, house ads and both an unused cover and self-portrait from Colan. Not the best Daredevil volume out there, certainly, but still a draw for fans of classic Marvel art.

Great art but lacks direction
This is a mixed bag. The art by Colan is great, very atmospheric and gives the comics a more mature feel than other marvel comics of the time. The writing is a bit hit and miss. I'm a big fan of Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway but this is not their best work. The first part of the book is Thomas and the Hollywood stuff doesn't work. Conway then takes over and it seems a bit directionless. However it picks up after issue 81. Black Widow joins the cast and the book starts to pick up momentum.

Excellent
Excellent as are most epic editions. Only disappointment being the stories sort of trail off when the Black Widow appears - the combo stories are probably in the next volume or so but the book is still full of some excellent Daredevil action and great artwork and it looks amazing. Many of the stories I have never read or if I have, probably once and only glanced over them so this is a joy to re-read and re-read. Pleased I bought the volume, looking forward to the next one.

There are no missing pages in this collection.
I was very disappointed to find out that this book was missing pages. When I started reading Iron Man number 36, I got to page number 8. After page number 8, instead of page number 9, Daredevil number 74 was next. There was a total of 11 pages missing from Iron Man number 36. I am in the process of hearing from ComiXology about this mistake. Hopefully, it will be soon. So far, I was enjoying this collection. Decent stories and great artwork. The one star rating is for the missing pages only. This is November 6 and they have not added the missing pages to this collection. I am not sure why this is taking so long to fix. I paid good money for a complete collection. I am not very happy about this.I made a mistake about this collection missing pages. The description on this collection says that SOME material from Iron Man number 36 is included, not the complete issue. This was my mistake and I feel kind of stupid. I am therefore giving this collection a five 🌟 review.
