Not Bad!
Purchased this pen more or less on a whim, after having it highly recommended by a friend for a general-purpose pocket pen. This is my second space pen, the first was a "bullet" type that I had while I was at the university. It ended up disappearing during a lab and I never had a chance to replace it locally, so I just didn't bother. Always did miss that one, so when my friend refreshed my memory, it didn't take much convincing!First reaction when it showed up was "Wow, that's a COOL box!" This particular pen comes in a plastic clamshell box, with an outer space-shuttle-printed slip sleeve. Not particularly important to the pen, obviously, but is definitely good enough to make a cool first impression if you wanted to present it to someone. The pen itself is of very good construction, feels extremely solid in your hand, and extends and retracts with a VERY positive feel, especially retraction. Hitting the retract button results in a very satisfying "thunk" as the point snaps back in, and the extension is very smooth and effortless. That, ironically, is about my only gripe with the pen. I tend to carry my pens in my right-front jeans pocket (I'm a lefty), and the extension and lock on this pen is so smooth that I've already found it extended and locked open in my pocket twice in the first day and a half. Switched it to my shirt pocket and the problem went away easily enough. Writing, obviously, is a ball-point feel, but a very reliable one. Space pens are known for absolute reliability (after all, isn't that what I just paid another $19 over a cheap Bic to gain?) and from the first go, writing has been smooth and perfect-starting. No scribbling around to get 'er rolling for this pen, just like my old Bullet. Size wise, oddly enough for as tough as it is, it's not very large! About the same outside dimensions as your common Bic throw-away, so no trouble fitting it into pen holder loops and things like that. Bit heavier, though, as befits it's all-steel-and-brass construction.Overall I am quite pleased, I would definitely buy this one again. I think I'll be picking up a couple more as gifts for friends.

Better than expected
What a great gift this will make in its attractive box. The pen, itself, is unusual in several respects. First of all, it's slimmer and lighter weight than I expected, which makes it nice for carrying in briefcase or purse as well as shirt or jacket pocket. The hatched grid design is not only handsome, it allows for a good grip even in a large hand, although some men might prefer more girth. The pen is standard length and has a good clip for security. The clip, too, is low profile and will allow the pen to fit in tight places. Its operation is entirely one-handed with an easy push down button on top to extend the tip and small separate side button to retract it. The ball is very smooth writing--better than my other space pen--even when held at an angle. Of course I love the instant writing ability of the space pens and am now spoiled about expecting that instant gratification so my other ball pens have fallen out of favor when they require some scribbling to get the ink flow started. These space pens never do need that.Because the packaging is a step up--a good-looking cardboard sleeve over a box which includes a little info booklet with refill ordering form--it will make a nice gift presentation. The packaging isn't excessive so as to seem wasteful, but is nicely wrappable and offers a moment of anticipation to the recipient as it's opened.Bottom line--this is a very practical pen and is meant first and foremost for that, but looking nice doesn't hurt so although I bought this one for myself, I'll be purchasing others as gifts.

My favorite pen
The feeling of the pen in your hands (I am referring to the Black Matte, which has a satin feel to it) is excellent, and not at thick as some of the other Fisher Pens. It is a thinner stylus in terms of diameter. Additionally, while not quite as smooth a a G2 Gel pen, the particular substance (I've heard it is almost a paste) is almost just as good, and I never have to worry about it drying out or not working when writing on a vertical surface like a clipboard on a wall.It is also a nice conversation piece if you know the history of it's creation. The Russkis won the "pen race" in that they simply used lead/graphite pencils in zero gravity instead of pumping millions of dollars into the develop this technology, the space pen. Again, history., and it is a great pen.Only downside is I think it is a bit overpriced. Other than that, recommended. (But go with the Black Matte with the Gold Highlights!)

GREAT OVERALL INSTRUMENT!
Nice looking, VERY comfortable in the hand, and smooth writing.Gold part more whitish gold than picture seems to show, which is fine with me.Light groove rings are good for slip-control.Slim, good clip, and tip clicker, which I prefer, although it is retracted with a small button near the top on the side of the barrel, which is a little hard to get used to.Ink flow unaffected by cold temperatures. My first space pen (other than a bullet I recently purchased), and favorite reliable pen now, that I will definitely carry always.Shipping good, a little slow, but worth the wait.

Very Nice - Quality Pen
This is a high quality writing instrument. Metal body with a black finish. The actual writing part is the Fisher refill, which is a Fisher Space Pen standard, i.e., well done but available in a variety of configurations. The pen is a slim body design, but it's not slick in-hand. It writes well. The clicker part of this pen is unique to a small group of similar Fisher space pen models. The back-end clicker pushes the pen-point forward, while the button on the side near the back end releases the pen tip, i.e., it's not a rear-end-click to disengage the pen tip. That's an unusual feature, but it becomes second nature if you use it more than a couple of times.
