how long does starter cartridge last

Think I dragged mine out to about 6 months, maybe longer. It lasted long after the printer started saying it should be replaced. And I pulled it out and shook it near the end and it went a little bit longer. Was very happy with how much printing was done with the starter cartridge!

How often or how many pages (approx) does the toner cartridge require changing? Has anyone had problems using off-brand cartridges other than Canon?

I haven't finished the 500 ream of paper I opened in first using my new Canon printer. I usually use draft mode to save the cartridge. The Canon brand of cartridge is expensive, but I selected this Canon printer because a lot of off-brand cartridges were available for it. I'll be interested in others' responses so I can select the best off-brand replacement cartridge.

does it scan in color

Yes. There are two quick scan buttons one for black-and-white and one for color. It is a great printer scanner and copier

Does this work with macs?

I have bought three Canon printers, and all work well with Macs. You have to download the driver for the Mac from Canon's website and update it periodically. I own a previous version of this printer, an ImageClass MF4750dn, and it works fine with my IMac. I did call Canon when I first set it up, and they were very helpful. I also have a Canon MP970 connected to the same computer. That printer is 6 or 7 years old and still works great. I wouldn't buy any other brand printer. Btw, my OS is Mavericks 10.9.5, which is one step down from the current OS, and I have no printer problems.
