Off the Wall: A Portrait of Robert Rauschenberg

All you wanted to know about Rauschenberg and his Times
I thought that I understood a lot about abstract expressionism, pop, dada and the usual suspects and players in those years of American and New York Art but were my eyes opened! Calvin Tompkins masterfully unfolds the evolution of Bob Rauschenberg and his seemingly hypo manic creativity. The artist pushed the envelope, sometimes unsuccessfully but relentlessly. The writing is superb and the book, drawn from many previosly written pieces in the New Yorker and elsewhere, reads as compellingly as an action novel.Paul A.

WONDERFUL!
I love everything what Calvin Tompkins writes and Robert Rauschenberg is my favorite artist so this book couldn't be more delightful - written with a lot of everyday life details and historical facts this book gives a very wide overview of not only the life of this amazing artist, but also tells a lot about exciting art scene of New York from early 50's till almost today.

Tied together the chronology of Art and Artists of the period. Comprehensive and yet, a fun read for fans of this era in art.
Full of great historical info regarding Rauschenberg and his contemporaries. Interesting to learn the connections between artists of the time and the periods before and after. This is a valuable addition to my library of books about modern American art.

Good read
Makes one realize how much has changed in terms of the art world but also bangs home the point that we make what we make and then stuff happens.
