They actually block more sound. I use EARasers for playing music, so I can still hear with decent audio quality. **Q: Do these provide adequate protection for a loud concert?** A: I believe they offer adequate protection at concerts. I’ve been wearing them to concerts once or twice a month for the last few years. I haven’t had “ringing” in my ears the day after, like I used to get. I also don’t notice a difference of sound quality. **Q: How do you know what size to get???** A: I followed the suggestion that most women take a small and the size small fits me well. **Q: Why does this say -31 db but in the product description (and on the box) it says -19 db?** A: -31dB is the peak reduction, which occurs right around 4kHz. This filter was tested and received an NRR rating of 16, which is basically the average protection across all frequencies. To understand why there is this variation, please read our FAQ page on the Earasers website. The -19dB indication is a different filter. This is our standard for musicians, and again refers to the peak reduction at approximately 3200Hz. If you see this rating in the picture online, it is probably just the wrong box represented in the photo. The actual package received will indicate the correct peak or average reduction as per the NRR industry standards.
