The Magic Book: 1400s-1950s

Very enjoyable for the interested magician.

This is the best book ever written to date on performance magic history celebrating the topic through the centuries to the early 1960's. Copiously illustrated with beautifully reproduced photos - many many in color - with accompanying captions - this book is a magical production in itself! The original Taschen 2009 edition was a huge coffee table size book. This 2022 reprint is just as beautiful but in a reduced size approximately 10 inches high by 7 inches (nearly 550 pages) that should fit very well on a standard bookcase. I find this smaller book easier to thumb through than the bigger 2009 edition. It is well-made. The binding so far has stood up. I have seen copies of the 2009 book where due to its size the pages are separating from the spine. This book is a great and wonderful reading copy.

I am retired and I like to read a lot. This is one of the finest books I ever bought When I was younger I liked to do magic tricks. Now I read about the history of magic. If you like magic, either as an amateur performer, a professional performer, or a spectator, you will enjoy this book. It is huge, over 500 pages, like an encyclopedia, but unlike an encyclopedia, you will read every word. It is the perfect blend of text and photographs. The authors did a tremendous amount of work to include historical photos, posters, and program covers. It mentions all of the famous magicians that you have heard of, and many lesser known magicians that you probably never heard of. It is so fascinating, I could not put it down.

My boyfriend loved this gift. The book is bigger than their Bibliotheca Universalis series which is nice. Cover made of cloth. The binding is well done too. I don't know much about the history of magic like my boyfriend, but even I have enjoyed looking at the fun pictures and reading little tid bits about it here and there. Enjoyable overall.
