House Held Up by Trees

Worth a purchase, very original
A book that it at once sad and comforting, wistful and hopeful. A house, once lived in and loved, is abandoned, and gradually the forest that once ruled the land it is on reclaims the place, lifting the house into the sky. I loved it. I've never seen a story like it.

A wonderful book about how nature can lift us up
You will enjoy "House Held Up By Trees" by Ted Kooser and illustrated by Jon Klassen. The story is told in the simple and beautiful style of Kooser's poetry, so adults and children will enjoy this tale of how nature can lift us up. I don't write a lot of book reviews (I've written only one other for a book by John Yamrus), but I simply had to let readers know about his wonderful work. I don't have grandchildren yet, but when I do, one of the first stories I will read to them will be "House Held Up By Trees." - Terry Jude Miller

Pleasant Read
This book reminds me of the song "Sunrise/Sunset". The story is about the gradual change of a house that once was cared for, but over time changes throughout the seasons. You can also see the connection between the house changing and the people in the story changing - growing older. The illustrations work well with the story. Worth reading, but probably would be more appreciated by a more mature audience (upper grade or higher).

Great story but meant for a much older person
I bought this for my grandaughter but didn't give it to her. Great story but meant for a much older person, more for an adult really. The story line is kind of sad, although I don't think he meant it to be, but probably not for children. Ted is a wonderful writer for adults but this didn't impress me for children.

A lovely story
My 5yr old son was so touched by this book he asked to buy one for his friend. I think thats all the endorsement a book needs!

Would be better without words
I bought this because I love Klassen's other picture books (which I could not recommend more). The story he illustrates here is a simple and touching one and I give his illustration 5 stars. Unfortunately, Kooser's text is not so appealing, either to me or to my grandchildren. We tell our own story.

children's book for home library of Grandma
It is nice to have in my home library a child's books by a poet lauret. This is something I want my grandchildren to know about. The illustrations in this book are awesome and the story is fun and different. My grandson loved the book.

Beautiful Illustrations
Currently, I'm collecting picture books and have been searching for more unusual ones that have been published. When I say unusual, this can be because of the illustrations, the story or the themes they target. With this one, it was the illustrations by Jon Klassen that encourage me to buy it. And I was excited and inpatient for my delivery.I always read picture books twice, and the second time had more of an impact. The illustrations are wonderful, as anticipated but the story is quite an odd one. It's sad and there's an understanding of family and nature and how closely linked these two are, it just doesn't seem as finished as you would expect.I also question whether children will appreciate this or not, that will depend on the type of child I suppose.I don't regret buying this book, but it just wasn't what I expected, which is sometimes very nice. It does though, make a lovely contribution to my collection.

Beautiful
The poet Ted Kooser and illustrator Jon Klassen complement each other wonderfully in creating one of the most touching and hauntingly beautiful little stories I have ever read. Although simple, with each reading the story shakes my certainties time and again and lingers on my mind for a long time. It is, however, not a typical children's picture book, and I would not recommend it for small children.

beautiful illustrations and touching story
gorgeous book, very inspiring. I use it with groups that I work with (exploring woodland etc) and for my own inspiration. The illustrations are stunning and I think it prompts other story ideas.
