A Professional's Guide
As a practicing psychologist working in the area of major mental illness, I recommend this book. The authors provide both the theoretical understanding and practical interventions necessary in working effectively with this population. In addition to DVD provides illustration of just how to engage and work with persons with major mental illness.

CBT Therapy for Severe Mental Illness
This book came in excellent condition and in a timely manner. The book itself is not what I anticipated, its an easy read and not complex and doesn't use a bunch of difficult terminology.

A good introduction to CBT for very challenging problems
An excellent introduction to CBT for serious mental illness accompanied by a DVD with video examples. This will be very useful for therapists working with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe depression.

Culturally insensitive.
A very clear picture of CBT, yes, but the way the different clients are treated, in context of their race and gender, in the DVD is unacceptable. Stereotypes abound!

Comprehensive Classic Text
Now over five decades old, cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) is one of the most heavily researched and effective forms of psychotherapy. As a form of psychotherapy CBT now has a track record for helping in the treatment in both psychiatric and medical disorders such as cardiac, digestive system, cancer and other long-term conditions. The editors of this text expand a proven, effective treatment for this type of patient group. They provide a wide variety of learning exercises, worksheets, and checklists. There is also a vivid, well-produced video demonstration on DVD that offers visual back-up to the text. It acts to reinforce the key issues discussed by the authors, making the subject real and vivid. In the preface Wright et al. claim their book is unique in presenting a comprehensive CBT approach that can be used across the broad range of severe Axis I disorders (clinically developed mental dysfunction), to prevent relapse, promote treatment adherence, reduce symptoms, and maintain treatment gains. The authors are all internationally recognized experts in using CBT for severe mental illness. They provide a variety of functional strategies for treating patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and treatment-refractory depression.I found the guide well constructed and lucid. It covers specific symptoms in detail and promotes practitioners' skill building--including how to design useful interventions, and engage patients in effective therapeutic relationships. Lastly it provides effective psycho-education using classical Learning Theory. There are eighteen videos showing CBT in action. They cover clinical situations such as tracing the origins of paranoia and formulating an anti-suicide plan for patients at the extreme end of the depression spectrum. All practitioners including counsellors, psychotherapists and doctors working in this area should find something of value from these pages. Highly recommended and destined to become a core text book in the curriculum.

Excellent
Brilliant and very insightful. I bought it because of David Kingdon. CBT for severe mental illness is still somewhat controversial topic. Gives you good overview and exactly what you need to know in order to understand the aplication of CBT in that patient group. Absolutely essential and must have.
