Great book by an amazing artist
I've been waiting for this book before I even knew I was waiting for this book. I was turned onto Hische's work in my fundamental college design classes and have since been stalking her website for inspiration during my own lettering projects. For what it's worth, I do consider Hische to be the greatest modern vector letterer there is, so I suppose this review is somewhat biased. What I respect about Hische is that she's willing to share her secrets. If you've taken her Skillshare classes, there's a lot of repetitive info here, but even so it's great to have it in documented form so that you don't have to go back and watch the videos. If you haven't, well, prepare to get a lot of information thrown onto you that makes this a must-have manual for any aspiring letterer. What I believe is new content not seen in her video and on her website are all of the sketches, right down to the erased lines and pencil indents on the paper. The sketches not being 'retouched' to look perfect is absolutely wonderful and reassuring that not even the best letters get their lines right the first time. Hische shows her process for an intricate print featuring her most famous quote from beginning to finish, and then dives into different work she's done for clients. All of it is gorgeous, and I would be totally content with just a book of her work, but her sketches and rationales for everything bring it to life so much more. Not to mention, this is one gorgeous book inside and out. The hardcover is thick and vibrant, the interior is designed so well, and you can tell so much care was taken with the presentation. It's a masterpiece as far as design books go and sets the standard for lettering books to come.

Art Book Review of In Progress by Jessica Hische A+
The 176 page book "In Progress". ISBN# 9781452136226 is a full color, 8.2 x 10.2 inch, hard cover book. See Inside a Lettering Artist's Sketchbook and Process, from Pencil to Vector. I enjoyed going through Jessica's sketchbook and learning how she goes about her drawings. It helped me to learn her different techniques and allowed me to apply them to my own. The book goes over the 17 art materials she uses to draw her masterpieces, including the sketchbooks she likes to use. And then finally the digital art supplies that are used. And also includes the software and services that are important. I also really enjoyed the photo of her art studio, although I wish there was more. Basically after that she goes through the process of logo designs with "research and brainstorming", "Sketching" and "Vector Drawings". They are all great techniques! Less than half way through the book she goes right to "The Work". All her past jobs that she went through from thumbnail sketches to the light pencil drawings then to the pen and ink and finally color!PROS: Lots of color photos Shows the process she took very clearlyCONS: I do not see any cons, the book was done very well I gave this book "In Progress" by Jessica Hische, an A+ because it is very organized and helped me understand the process Helen takes to make some of the nicest logos in the world.

Her work is great, and she shows you why
Jessica Hische is someone that I stumbled upon years ago in my online search for great typographers. Not only are there lush back-to-back print outs of her work, but she also reveals the inner workings her process. I don't know many designers or artists that are interested in "revealing" their process (cuz someone might learn from them and make something better, and then the other person is ruined!!!!! ARGGG) 🤔😂 Jessica Hische shows us how vulnerability serves to further development in the arts rather than stifle it, as some might suggest. Excellent work and the bare bones of her entire process laid out so that we can also find our own unique expression within typography. Thank you Jessica!

GREAT BOOK
I’ll admit it was a little overwhelming the first time I went through it, buts that’s because I wasn’t that familiar with the experience of handlettering. However, after a week of practicing and going through some online courses , it made much more sense the second time around! It’s actually a very clear and concise explanation of handlettering for both hand tools and vector-based program! First half of book is teaching, the second half is her artwork and explanations of how she used that knowledge to create them. Lots of GREAT tips! My ONLY complaint was the size of the text on a lot of the pages. I almost sent it back because of that, but after reading in bright lit area and sometimes wearing my magnifying eyeglasses lol (I’m 59), I decided it was well worth getting through the small size of text. Definitely recommend for anyone getting into hand lettering!

Great for students looking to be future lettering artists!
To be honest, I bought this book on a whim without really expecting much. To my surprise it was actually really information and interesting to read. Jessica Hische's tone was also very down to earth and friendly enough to keep you interested enough to read through the whole book! For me it only took two days, not because it was really short but more because I wanted to finish the book to see her process as well as her designs.I think this book is great and very inspirational for young designers out there. Especially for designers that would one day like to specialize in Typography or lettering. She really makes you feel like it's possible with hard work as well as passion. Her book also has great tips on how to plan out your work schedule/design schedule for such work and I think even for student projects! I am definitely inspired to try and learn lettering art after reading this book.

A wonderful reference for lettering artists
You can enjoy this book for the informative text, or study the illustrations to get ideas about how to improve your work and be more creative. It can be boring to learn calligraphy and lettering from the standard "how to" books. Jessica's book is not boring at all, and it makes me excited to see what I can do with letterforms and words. If you are ready to move past beginner level instruction books, this book is great inspiration.

Spettacolare

Very well presented book. But
only one issue the text is very very small and makes me feel like I need glasses.

Great buy!
Has excellent examples. Has a lot of text, where the author talks in great details and a very candid manner. There are a few pages where you can practice over the traced designs. Page quality is thick and excellent. Good for beginners ++!!
