Good Build Quality & Very Accurate Tire Tread Depth Gauge
This review is for the QuickCar Racing Products 56-104 Tire Tread Depth Gauge. I've been using the gauge for a couple of weeks now, and I find it to be very accurate. It zeroes out perfectly and is extremely easy to read. The gauge body is metal, and the lens appears to be made of acrylic. It feels solid and is heavy. The pouch is well made and the material is double layered. I was concerned that the metal button would scratch the lens, but the metal is between the double layer and doesn't touch the lens. The pouch is definitely handy for protecting this tool.I decided to pay extra to get this higher quality tire tread depth gauge over the cheap pin/bar type. From reviews I have seen, the cheap ones easily become uncalibrated and are harder to read. I purchased this QuickCar one based on articles I read recommending this as the best analog gauge. It appears that there are many brand names that seem to be built the same as this one. Most likely one manufacturer is building them for most if not all of the other companies. Pictures of some other seem to be the same, while some others seem to have a different lens and/or coated metal body. The only thing that I wish this gauge had is color coding on the dial for green, yellow, and red to indicate good tread depth, replace soon, or low tread depth. I have seen this on some other identical looking gauges. If I had to buy a tire tread depth gauge again, I would either go with this one or maybe try the one by Steelman. The Steelman one seems to be the same in the photos with a similar pouch, but with a color coded dial and lower price point. This of course would only be if the Steelman one has at least the same quality as this QuickCar Racing Products one.Update:I tried the color-coded dial-type tread depth Gauge from Steelman. It would not zero out, and would start from negative 1/128". The case was the same, but the lens was not as nice. The pouch seemed to be the same in the picture and from the outside, but the Steelman has the same pleather material inside the pouch that is on the outside. The gauge sticks to the pleather making it difficult to pull the gauge out of the pouch. The QuickCar Racing Products pouch has a felt inside the pouch that allows the gauge to slide out easily. The QuickCar gauge and pouch are the best I have seen so far.

Great quality and durability!
I purchased this to replace my old one and it works great. It's different from everyone else's in the shop so I know which one is mine when it gets misplaced. Overall, great quality, well calibrated, and very robust design. Don't mind spending the extra few bucks for a nice gauge.

Surprisingly handy!
I bought this to replace the forth tread depth gauge that had disappeared in several months, bit the extra precision that this offers has been very handy for tire measurements, particularly state inspections. As someone with glasses, the sliding gauges were difficult to read, and even then it could be hats to tell which line they were on. It's also much easier to spot erratic tire wear from alignments and sell it early. And to make sure odd tire fitments are inflated properly. And it just looks cooler and more professional than a cheap plastic pocket gauge. While I was worried about it being fragile at first, it's gotten a little covered in road salt, slush, dirt, and mud, and hadn't really had any issues. The body is metal but the lens seems like sort of thin plastic, so that might break, and might not stand up to solvents. But that hasn't been an issue for me.

Feels high quality and case is a nice touch despite pricepoint
Would be nice if it was around the $10-$15 price range or lower, but I still think it is working buying as it feels very accurate and has a nice feel in the hand.

Easier to read than the stick type gauges
I bought this due to ease of use/reading compared to the cheap stick type depth gauges. My stick type gauge has both 32nds and MM. It was difficult to read and sometimes I would accidentally look at the MM readings instead of 32nds. This gauge is much easier to read with more precision. The lack of color coding on the dial face was a plus to me. It seems like that could make it tougher to read. The zero on it seems accurate as well.As far as usage goes, it was easy to use by either extending the gauge all the way out and then pressing it against the tire or putting against the tire and then pressing the top button to extend the gauge out. You can gently press the top button when it's in place to confirm that the gauge is fully extended.

Very nice
I’m a professional mechanic and part of our vehicle inspections is tread depth. I’ve used the little plastic ones for years but they start coming apart after a few weeks and they’re hard to read. This is a very nice gauge that feels extremely solid and couldn’t be easier to read. The little leather pouch is also excellent quality. Just feels like a well made, heavy, precision tool.
